PAWN STARS’ Rick Harrison’s Son Dies of Fentanyl Overdose

By Movieguide® Contributor

PAWN STARS personality Rick Harrison revealed that his son, Adam, died of a fentanyl overdose.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Harrison said, “Yes, I can confirm Adam died from a fentanyl overdose. The fentanyl crisis in this country must be taken more seriously. It seems it is just flowing over the borders and nothing is being done about it. We must do better.”

The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) describes fentanyl as “a synthetic opioid typically used to treat patients with chronic severe pain or severe pain following surgery.  Fentanyl is a Schedule II controlled substance that is similar to morphine but about 100 times more potent.  Under the supervision of a licensed medical professional, fentanyl has a legitimate medical use. Patients prescribed fentanyl should be monitored for potential misuse or abuse.”

However, addiction to the drug has escalated in America in recent years.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “The rate of overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids in 2021 was nearly 22 times the rate in 2013. Nearly 71,000 drug overdose deaths involved synthetic opioids other than methadone in 2021. The latest provisional drug overdose death counts suggest overdose deaths accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Those who have been impacted by fentanyl addiction are urging lawmakers to take steps to stop its flow into the country.

Country singer Jelly Roll spoke at a Senate hearing to promote a bill that would fight the crisis.

“During the time I’ve been given to share my testimony here, I think it’s important to note before I start that in these five minutes I’ll be speaking that somebody in the United States will die of a drug overdose, and it is almost a 72% chance that during those five minutes, it will be fentanyl-related,” he said.

As a former drug dealer, “I brought my community down,” Jelly Roll continued. “I hurt people. I was the uneducated man in the kitchen playing chemist with drugs I knew absolutely nothing about, just like these drug dealers are doing right now, mixing every drug on the market with fentanyl, and they’re killing the people we love.”

“I’ve attended more funerals than I care to share with y’all,” he concluded. “I could sit here and cry for days about the caskets I’ve carried of people I love dearly, deeply in my soul. Good people, not just drug addicts. Uncles, friends, cousins, normal people.”

The FEND Off Fentanyl Act “will enhance current law so U.S. government agencies can more effectively disrupt illicit opioid supply chains and penalize those facilitating the trafficking of fentanyl. The bill also ensures that sanctions are imposed not only on the illicit drug trade, but also on the money laundering that makes it profitable,” NBC News reported.

Movieguide® previously reported on legislation that hopes to restrict kids’ ability to purchase drugs via social media:

Dr. Laura Berman celebrated the introduction of Sammy’s Law to Congress in honor of her son who died from a drug overdose after purchasing pills laced with fentanyl on Snapchat.

The law would require platforms with minors on them to allow third-party sources to monitor children’s social media accounts and warn parents of concerning behavior.

“I had no idea that drug dealers were reaching out to my son, accessing my son and connecting with my son through Snapchat,” Berman told ABC News in an interview. “We’re doing this to save other children from Sammy’s fate and to save other families from the devastation that we have to live with every day.”

Sammy “died from a fentanyl-laced drug obtained on social media on February 7, 2021, and delivered to his home ‘like a pizza,’” Fox 11 reported.
