The episode depicts the Israelite soldiers returning home and celebrating their victory with the inhabitants of the capital city. King Saul announces that David was the hero of the battle, and gives him his daughter in marriage, as well as the command of a thousand troops.

King Saul is also surprised to see his son Eshbaal, who has returned from exile. While he and Queen Ahinoam are worried about the king’s reaction, he is overjoyed to see his son and happy that their family is reunited.

Elsewhere, Samuel is imprisoned for not supporting King Saul. Several of the king’s advisors visit him, urging him to re-anoint King Saul, but he refuses, citing a “darkness” that’s consuming the king.

David returns home for the funeral of his brother, who fell in battle with the Philistines. However, when Israelite soldiers come, demanding he return to the city as he is now a commander, tensions rise between him and his brother Eliab, who is angry that his younger brother is now his commander.

When David returns to the city, he officially accepts King Saul’s offer to join his family as his son-in-law, as well as to be a commanding officer in the army.
