Baseball Legend Ryne Sandberg Asks for ‘Prayers’ Amid Cancer Diagnosis

By Movieguide® Contributor

Former Chicago Cubs infielder and Hall of Fame inductee Ryne Sandberg is asking for prayers following his metastatic prostate cancer diagnosis.

In a statement released on his social media, Sandberg wrote, “To my Chicago Cubs, National Baseball Hall of Fame, extended Baseball Family, the city of Chicago, and all my loyal fans, I want to share some personal news.”

“Last week, I learned that I have been diagnosed with metastatic prostate cancer,” he continued. “I have begun treatment, and I am surrounded by my loving wife Margaret, our incredibly supportive family, the best medical care team, and our dear friends. We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time for me and my family.”

According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, metastatic prostate cancer occurs when “cancer cells…escape the prostate and grow quickly, spreading to nearby tissue, or ‘metastasizing.’ Nearby lymph nodes are often the first destination for a spreading cancer. If prostate cancer has spread to your lymph nodes when it is diagnosed, it means that there is higher chance that it has spread to other areas of the body as well.”

The foundation continued, “If and when prostate cancer cells gain access to the bloodstream, they can be deposited in various sites throughout the body, most commonly in bones, and more rarely to other organs such as the liver, lung, or brain. Bone metastases are seen in 85% to 90% of metastatic cases.”

Sandberg has earned respect in the world of baseball.

“Sandberg, 64, played in parts of 16 big-league seasons, almost entirely with the Cubs. He amassed a career .285/.344/.452 slash line (114 OPS+) and notched roughly 68 Wins Above Replacement, per Baseball Reference. He was a 10-time All-Star as well as a winner of nine Gold Glove Awards, seven Silver Slugger Awards, and the 1984 National League Most Valuable Player Award. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005, earning more than 76% of the vote in his third year on the ballot.” CBS Sports wrote.

Pray for Sandberg and his family as they navigate this difficult situation.
