‘Awe-Inspiring’ THE BOOK OF ELI Gets Prequel Series, Stars John Boyega

Actor John Boyega, known for his roles in recent STAR WARS movies and PACIFIC RIM UPRISING, will star in and executive produce THE BOOK OF ELI’s upcoming prequel series.

“Boyega will play younger version of [Denzel] Washington’s Eli in the project, which hails from the movie’s writer, Gary Whitta, creator/writer/executive producer of the potential series, and its directors, the Hughes brothers, who executive produce. The film’s producer Alcon Entertainment is the studio on the TV project, which is about to be taken out to select premium buyers, I hear,” wrote Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva.

Screen Rant reported that the cast will also include Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Jennifer Beals, Michael Gambon, Tom Waits and Malcolm McDowell.

THE BOOK OF ELI is a neo-western movie set 30 years after a nuclear disaster. In it, Eli battles his way through the apocalypse while guarding a book—humanity’s last hope.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review of the movie reads:

THE BOOK OF ELI is very captivating, awe-inspiring, and ultimately uplifting, with excellent production standards and absorbing character portrayals. The movie’s blatant support of Christianity and the overt references to the Bible are greatly encouraging and very surprising. Throughout the story, Eli prays, teaches others to pray, quotes Scripture, and walks by faith in God. Regrettably, extreme caution is advised for the movie’s excessive amount of extreme, brutal violence, some scenes of implied, attempted rape, and unnecessary foul language. It may be difficult for many viewers to sit through some of the violent scenes.

The 2010 movie had a successful run at the box office and earned $157.1 million worldwide, nearly twice its budget.

“Details about the TV series are sketchy, but I hear it is set 30 years prior to the events in the film, which would put it around the time of the nuclear event or its immediate aftermath,” Andreeva said.

“This marks one of the highest-profile, star-driven, IP-based packages to hit the premium TV marketplace since the end of the Hollywood strikes,” she continued.  “While there have been a handful of deals so far, buying has been slow out of the gate. It is expected to pick up in early 2024, with THE BOOK OF ELI an example of the caliber of auspices and premise a TV package needs to stand out.”

Boyega as the lead actor will likely help the show do just that—stand out. Digital Spy noted that the 31-year-old won a Golden Globe Award for his role in the series SMALL AXE. His recent roles in THE WOMAN KING and THEY CLONED TYRONE have also contributed to the movies’ success.
