Pro surfer Bethany Hamilton revealed that she and her family are going through a hard time, but one Bible verse gives her hope and peace.
“It’s been such, honestly, like a super rough season for my family and I, you can’t help but think, like, whoa, Satan really doesn’t want what we got going on to thrive, because he’s really working against us,” she said, responding to a fan asking “What’s a verse you cling to in harder times in life?”
“And to me, I’m always just, literally, the last five-10 years, referring back to John 16:33: ‘I’ve said these things to you that in me, you will have peace. In the world, you will have trouble, but take heart, I have overcome the world,'” she quoted.
“And I think that’s just a staple verse for anyone who’s of faith, because, you know, God doesn’t say life’s going to be easy,” the mom of four continued. “He’s like, you will have trouble, but remember, I’m the one you need. I’m your peace, I’m your hope, I’m your everything. And all the trials and the hardship and the pain, we can look to God to strengthen us, comfort us, be our peace and our hope, and we often won’t find any of that in this life.”

Hamilton knows firsthand that God brings peace amid trials. After a shark attack at age 13 left her without one of her arms, she leaned into trusting God’s plan.
“There is so much to be grateful for, and these past 20 years have been filled with incredible moments and huge overcoming seasons,” Hamilton wrote in 2023. “Many people could look at the incident back in 2003 as a major setback for me, but God had so much in store for the future!”
Her mission today includes encouraging other women who have suffered limb loss. Hamilton attended the Beautifully Flawed Foundation Retreat last weekend.
The Beautifully Flawed Foundation is on a mission to “encourage a broken world and offer hope to overcome through Jesus Christ. We believe there is a longing within every individual to overcome the trials, pains and difficulties of life.”
“It was filled with…pushing limits, building friendships, seeking God together and enjoying some beach time!” Hamilton said of the event.
Like Hamilton, we can take heart knowing that Christ will bring peace to our chaos.
