Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III praised God after surviving a “scary” car accident alongside his wife and four kids while traveling to TCU for a football game.

“Just got in the worst car accident of our lives with my wife and kids in Fort Worth, Texas. Scary crash, ricocheted off the highway divider multiple times, blown both front tires. Thankful to God that my wife and kids are safe,” Griffin wrote in an Instagram post. He included pictures of the cars involved.

The Fort Worth Police Department told PEOPLE, “South units were dispatched to a major accident involving 4 vehicles near the 6400 block of South Freeway. Upon arrival, officers located 3 of the vehicles that were involved; the other had left the scene prior to officers’ arrival. Medical personnel made the scene and transported an occupant to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries.”

The next day, the former quarterback took to social media again and shared a new “level of gratitude.”

“Yesterday reminded us that life can change in a second,” Griffin began. “The truth is, God doesn’t always stop the storm in your life. Sometimes God rides through the storm with you. Yesterday could’ve been our last day, but God’s mercy said not yet. Everyone in all 4 cars involved in the car accident, including a woman who was 22 weeks pregnant, walked away alive.

“That in itself is a blessing,” he continued, before providing an update on his health. “I have 2 vertebral fractures in my back and I’m thankful for my teammates at @cfbonfox @nflonfox and @foxsports for taking care of us through all of this. Thank you to @tcufootball and Dr. Kirk for helping us get the proper and necessary care yesterday.”

“Ultimately, those cars are replaceable, but the families inside them are not,” he added. “Thank you to God for protecting us all. In times of chaos, you find out who has your back and who really cares about you. Thank you guys for all the prayers and well wishes. You guys are the best. No way we were gonna let that stop us or scare us from calling this Colorado and TCU game. Broken back and all, let’s enjoy some football.”

Though he retired from the NFL in 2020, Griffin has stayed close to the league as an analyst, first working for ESPN before joining Fox Sports.

Praise God that Griffin and his family are all safe and relatively healthy after the car accident.
