New England Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson knows he need God to keep football from becoming an idol in his life.
“I’m just constantly in prayer, asking the Lord to guard my heart from the love of money and guard my heart from the idolization of football,” Henderson said on the “Sports Spectrum” podcast.
The Bible says in Mark 8:36, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?”
Before Henderson came to know Christ, he was “idolizing football, idolizing money, getting my identity wrapped up in these things.”
He was beginning to lose his own soul, but then God stepped in.
“But the Lord said when we come to Him, the old has passed away and the new has come to life. He made me new through Jesus Christ,” the running back declared. “I’ve been made new so I no longer have the desire to serve these things — the idol of football, the idol of money — I just want to serve the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Henderson reflected on how King Solomon had everything he wanted in life but was still unsatisfied.

“King Solomon had much more than all of us. He had the women, fame, power and all of that during that time. But he said at the end of the day, it’s all worthless, and that’s what I realized in my own life,” Henderson explained. “I was accomplishing everything at one point. I had the money, women, but at the end of the day, deep in my heart, I was empty, lost, broken inside.”
“When I came to Christ, I found healing, true love, true purpose, true identity, and I realized who I truly am and who God always intended for me to be: His son,” he added.
Ever since Henderson found new life in Christ, he made it his mission to serve God through his NFL career.
When he scored multiple touchdowns in one game last season, he told THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL, “I can’t do it without Jesus.”
“I’ve just been staying patient, trusting in the Lord’s plan,” he added. “Just continuing to do my part, and the rest I just leave up to him.”
