F1: THE MOVIE  director Joseph Kosinski revealed that he would be excited to bring another chapter of that story to life given the opportunity.

“I personally would love to see what other adventures Sonny Hayes has in his future,” Kosinski told Deadline. “I’d love to see what’s happening with the APXGP team and Joshua Pearce, and see how his career goes, so I would love to be able to tell another chapter in that story and it’s something we just kinda started dreaming about and it’s fun to be in this stage of imagining what that might be.”

F1: THE MOVIE was an extremely successful title from Apple, grossing over $600 million at the worldwide box office before being added to Apple TV+. The story focused on teamwork, sacrifice and redemption, while largely remaining family-friendly, helping it pull such a strong audience. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

F1 THE MOVIE has some of the most riveting racing scenes ever filmed. It tells a compelling redemptive story with engaging characters. Teamwork and sacrifice win the day. The movie also promotes friendship, a strong mother-son relationship and the importance of fathers. It also has positive Christian references. However, there’s lots of light to medium foul language, five strong obscenities and profanities, and an implied bedroom scene. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong caution for F1 THE MOVIE.

The success of the movie also came as F1 has started to become extremely popular in the U.S., largely thanks to the behind-the-scenes Netflix documentary, DRIVE TO SURVIVE. While Netflix is associated with the sport among American audiences, Apple is looking to get in on the action and signed a five-year distribution deal with F1 in October.

“We are no strangers to each other, having spent the past three years working together to create F1 THE MOVIE, which has already proven to be a huge hit around the world,” said Formula 1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali after the deal was announced. “We have a shared vision to bring this amazing sport to our fans in the U.S. and entice new fans through live broadcasts, engaging content, and a year-round approach to keep them hooked.”

“I want to thank Tim Cook, Eddy Cue, and the entire Apple team for their vision and passionate approach to delivering this partnership, and we are looking forward to the next five years together,” he added.

As Apple become the major distributor of the sport in the U.S., it will be interesting to see if it looks to further develop interest in F1 through another movie and allow Kosinski to tell more of Hayes’ story.
