Olympic figure skater Scott Hamilton believes kindness can change everything.

“What if I told you that kindness is strength?” Hamilton asked in an Instagram video before sharing a personal story.

“I was coming out of an airport one time, and I changed lanes without looking,” the Olympic gold medalist shared. “My son was in the car with me, and I accidentally cut a guy off, and I pulled back into my lane, and I went to apologize, and he just wouldn’t have it. He was flipping me off, road rage extraordinaire. This guy just completely lost the plot. And he kept trying to get close to me, and I kept looking at him and trying to apologize.”

Hamilton continued: “And finally, his behavior got so outrageous that I couldn’t stop laughing. And so he finally ended up at the light next to each other, and he’s just yelling. He goes, ‘What’s so funny?’ I go, ‘I’m trying to apologize,’ and he had nothing to say, so he flipped me off again and turned the corner.”

“Kindness takes everything we have. It’s beautiful. It’s wonderful. It’s something we all deserve, and it’s something I think we need to lead with, no matter what the circumstance,” he emphasized.

Hamilton certainly lives with a heart of care and kindness as he seeks to help those battling cancer, a disease he also fights.

His annual Scott Hamilton & Friends show at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, is coming up this weekend.

The night will be “a truly unforgettable event that blends the athleticism of figure skating with live music! Scott Hamilton & Friends brings together Olympic, World, and National Champion Figure Skaters, alongside the biggest names in music, for a can’t-miss, family-friendly all-star performance,” a description of the event reads.

The best part of the evening is that each “moment of this enchanting evening supports the invaluable work of the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation, as we fundraise for innovative cancer research. By joining us, you become a part of something truly remarkable and make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.”

“I never would’ve thought to dream that one day I would found a cancer organization that’s actually going to have impact and save lives,” he told PEOPLE of his organization in 2024. “I never would’ve thought to dream that an Olympic gold medal experience would’ve allowed me to give so much back to my sport and help create a platform to give careers to so many of the greatest skaters in the history of the sport.”

“And to have my children and just how amazing they are, and my wife and how amazing she is? I never would’ve thought to dream any of it,” he emphasized.

For Hamilton, kindness is a way of life — whether that’s responding to road rage with grace or encouraging those battling cancer. Let’s all lead with kindness today.
