Comedian Jeff Foxworthy knows what Americans want — but does Hollywood?
“I don’t think Hollywood has understood that audience in a long, long time,” he told Fox News. “I don’t care where they live or where they stand politically, if you sat people down and said, ‘What do you want out of life?’ I bet we would agree on 85% of the things.”
Foxworthy continued, “We want the same things. But what happened was, instead of celebrating the 85% that we’re all alike, we yell and scream at each other over the 15% that we’re different. Being different is fine. It would be boring…if we were all alike and all thought the same way.”
The comedian is currently promoting his most recent special THE JOKE’S ON ME, a behind-the-scenes look into his creative process that was inspired by the Beatles documentary, GET BACK.
“I thought, you know, nobody’s ever done that with stand-up,” Foxworthy told NPR.

He also made it clear that this will probably be his last stand-up special, as he is focused more on family than career these days.
“If I got a spare Wednesday evening, I don’t want to be in a club with no cards in my hands. I’d rather be laying in the bed, reading to my grandkids,” he explained. “It’s not because I didn’t love this thing. It’s because I love other things, too.”
Foxworthy also shared his hopes for THE JOKE’S ON ME, saying he wants aspiring comedians to use it as inspiration.
“Nobody has your life experience. Nobody has your point of view,” he said in an interview with Atlanta Magazine. “The sooner you learn to let your stand-up be you, the better it will work. That’s just part of the learning curve…I think you just need to do it every night for 10 years and then all of a sudden you have a style.”
While Foxworthy is slowing down on stand-up, he did say he’s interested in continuing to tour, possibly doing a lecture series similar to Mark Twain’s 19th century talks.
“He was funny. He was really smart. He was able to break things down simply. I’d love to do something where I share life advice in that way,” he said. “It feels like it’s been a long time since somebody did that.”
The comedian added, “I’ve been doing this for 42 years. I’m not interested in doing it the same way. Sometimes it’s great to fail, as long as you’re pushing boundaries. I just want to follow my instinct. That’s what makes it fun and exciting when you’re creative.”
THE JOKE’S ON ME is streaming now on Fox Nation.
