‘A Blessing’: Damar Hamlin Discharged From Hospital After Experiencing Cardiac Arrest

By Movieguide® Contributor

Injured Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin has been discharged from the hospital!

Earlier this month, Hamlin went into cardiac arrest during a game and was rushed to the hospital. He was in the ICU for several days.

Now, the football player is home and continuing his recovery.

Hamlin’s physician, Dr. Jamie Nadler, said the hospital is “confident that Damar can be safely discharged to continue his rehabilitation at home and with the Bills.”

Bills coach Sean McDermott shared his support of Hamlin as well as his thoughts on him rejoining the Bills, saying, “His health is first and foremost on our mind as far as this situation. And then when he feels ready, we will welcome him back.”

Quarterback Josh Allen said that none of Hamlin’s teammates have been able to see him yet, but they are “chomping at the bit” to visit him.

“[We’re] just making sure that he’s getting his rest from recovery and taking it slow,” Allen shared. “So, we’ll take all the time that we need. But I hope he knows the guys are ready to see him.”

Hamlin’s teammate, Dion Dawkins, called his recovery “a blessing.”

While Hamlin is no doubt ready to rejoin his team, McDermott emphasized that all he and the Bills want is for their teammate to make a full recovery.

“[He] want[s] us to go do our job, and that’s what we’ve got to do,” the coach said of their upcoming games.

Movieguide® previously reported on Hamlin’s recovery:

After going into cardiac arrest mid-game last week and being rushed to a local hospital, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is now breathing and speaking on his own strength.

The team announced that doctors were able to remove the 24-year-old player’s breathing tubes and that he FaceTimed his teammates.

“Per the physicians at UCMC, Damar’s breathing tube was removed overnight,” the Bills said on Twitter. “He continues to progress remarkably in his recovery.

“His neurologic function remains intact and he has been able to talk to his family and care team,” they added.

People from around the world have gathered to pray for Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest mid-game on Monday.

“Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition,” the Bills tweeted shortly after midnight on January 3.

The Monday night game against the Cincinnati Bengals, which was suspended after Hamlan’s injury, has now been canceled.

On Friday, Hamlin was able to FaceTime his teammates during their morning meeting.

“Love you boys,” Hamlin said.

The head coach for the Bills, Sean McDermott, thanked God for protecting and providing for Hamlin.

“Glory to God for His keeping Damar and his family in the palm of His hand over the last couple of days and His healing powers,” McDermott said in a press conference on Thursday.

McDermott also thanked the first-responders who were able to resuscitate Hamlin on the field, and for the family, friends and fans’ prayers.

“The faith, hope and love that have been displayed over the last three days has been nothing short of amazing,” he said. “It’s amazing to know the impact that this has had on so many people. And for Damar to be awake and his mom to be able to share that with him is incredible.”
