By Movieguide® Staff

After going into cardiac arrest mid-game last week and being rushed to a local hospital, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin is now breathing and speaking on his own strength.

The team announced that doctors were able to remove the 24-year-old player’s breathing tubes and that he FaceTimed his teammates.

“Per the physicians at UCMC, Damar’s breathing tube was removed overnight,” the Bills said on Twitter. “He continues to progress remarkably in his recovery.

“His neurologic function remains intact and he has been able to talk to his family and care team,” they added.

People from around the world have gathered to pray for Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest mid-game on Monday.

“Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition,” the Bills tweeted shortly after midnight on January 3.

The Monday night game against the Cincinnati Bengals, which was suspended after Hamlan’s injury, has now been canceled.

On Friday, Hamlin was able to FaceTime his teammates during their morning meeting.

“Love you boys,” Hamlin said.

The head coach for the Bills, Sean McDermott, thanked God for protecting and providing for Hamlin.

“Glory to God for His keeping Damar and his family in the palm of His hand over the last couple of days and His healing powers,” McDermott said in a press conference on Thursday.

McDermott also thanked the first-responders who were able to resuscitate Hamlin on the field, and for the family, friends and fans’ prayers.

“The faith, hope and love that have been displayed over the last three days has been nothing short of amazing,” he said. “It’s amazing to know the impact that this has had on so many people. And for Damar to be awake and his mom to be able to share that with him is incredible.”

McDermott took the head coaching job in 2017, and since then has led the Bills to several postseason runs and division titles.

“I just want to praise God for this afternoon and this day; what a beautiful day in Orchard Park, New York,” he said after the teams first postseason win since 1995 in the 2021 season. “To Him be all the glory.”

McDermott is open about his faith in God on and off the field.

“I believe that God’s plan prevails, and God had a plan. He ordained this to happen for me to come to Buffalo with my family,” McDermott said in an interview with ‘FCA Sports Talk’ in 2020. “I mean, fit is important, right? This is a blue jeans, work boots style community, and that’s me, that’s how I grew up. And so God had this plan, and He had it planned since I was born, to bring me here and my family for a reason. I still, at the end of the day, am waiting to see, as we continue to move forward, His plan continue to unfold for us in Buffalo. … I just know God’s in control.”

Ahead of the team’s first game back since Hamlin’s injury, a game against the New England Patriots, McDermott said that he and the team will rely on strength that comes from God.

“I’m a Christian man to begin with, and I’m not afraid to say that,” McDermott said on Thursday. “I know that when you’re trying to do good things or great things, sometimes you come across opposition. I’ll leave that part of it there. How do I know that we’ll be able to overcome? We have to, just like we’ve done many times before in this city. The people of Western New York, what they’ve dealt with, that’s what you do.”
