Actor/ Director Breaks Down How to Choose Joy in the Face of Adversity

By Jessilyn Lancaster, Managing Editor

Justin Baldoni, director of FIVE FEET APART, says he was inspired to put the movie together after terminal patients taught him how to choose joy in the face of adversity.

“At the end of the day, it’s supposed to give us hope,” Baldoni tells Movieguide®.

“Like this is this movie about hope; it’s about love; it’s about… fighting for life and appreciating what you have. Because what so many of us take for granted, there are others, [who] every single day fighting for that same privilege. I hope at the end of the day, this movie can inspire and lift up and be a light and a pretty dark time, and that you call your mom or your dad or your boyfriend or girlfriend or whoever … and you tell them you love them. Because otherwise, what’s the point of making movies?”

While Baldoni is not a Christian, he said the movie challenged him to really consider life after death.

Baldoni says he and the movie’s stars, Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse, openly discussed the afterlife and how faith plays a role in it.

“We have to have faith in something, whether it’s in humanity, or whether it’s in God,” Baldoni says. “Because otherwise life can get pretty dark. So this movie, you know, there’s a lot of faith kind of woven in, even though it’s not a faith[-based] movie.”

Please pray for Baldoni’s heart to be opened to the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
