BATMAN star Julie Newmar says co-star Burt Ward was “absolutely perfect” as Robin, the Caped Crusader’s sidekick in the ’60s series.
“Give the producer William Dozier and 20th Century Fox credit for making the absolutely perfect decision to cast Burt Ward as Robin,” the actress, who played Catwoman, recently said, per Fox News.
Newmar joked, “He even annoyed Adam West [the actor who played Batman] a bit — not out of malice, but out of the sheer admiration one has for an adored [hero].”
Ward also praised his co-star, telling Fox News, “I loved Julie. She was always very nice. She was unpredictable, and so was Adam. So you just never knew what they were going to do or say on set. They each would suddenly have a zinger. But I got along with them great. I was really like a kid in a candy store.”
Newmar, Ward and West co-starred on BATMAN, a series that ran from 1966 to 1968 and is still beloved by fans of the comic book characters today.
Ward, who recently turned 80, spoke to Remind Magazine about his time on the show, crediting its success to his “instant chemistry” with West.

“Of course, you’ve got the fact that it was in color,” he added. “We were one of the first television series in all colors and look how colorful it is. How could you have anything more colorful than Batman, the villains and the Batmobile?”
When asked what episode was his favorite, Ward said, “All of them!”
“You got to understand — for me — as a young actor, working with these incredible stars, I was the kid in the candy store,” he explained. “Every episode included somebody that I idolized, either by watching them in movie theaters or on TV. Everyone was a superstar to me, and they were incredibly nice…everyone knew their lines perfectly. They were on time. They never missed a take, and it was just a level of precision. It was awesome to watch as a young actor.”
Ward has previously spoken about his bond with West. After BATMAN ended, the pair remained lifelong friends until West’s death in 2017.
“We could just sit down and not have anything to talk about, and within minutes, we were just laughing, reminiscing, talking about current events and remembering the good times,” Ward told Fox News. “Whenever he came over to my house, we just had the greatest time…he was truly the funniest, nicest guy. Gosh, just thinking about him. I miss him so much. He should be here.”
BATMAN’s run on television was fairly short, but the show still holds a special place in hearts around the world, from viewers to the series’ stars themselves.
