Chip Gaines Shares Some Relatable Thoughts About Aging
By Movieguide® Contributor
On the eve of a major age milestone, Chip Gaines shared his thoughts about what turning 50 means to him.
“I didn’t know that there’s a real obvious [explanation],” Gaines, who turns 50 this month, told Drew Barrymore. “I guess in my mind’s eye Peter Pan never turned 50. You know what I mean?”
“When you’ve got this Peter Pan syndrome, you’ve always evaluated yourself through a childlike lens. Then it’s just like, how does that sort of co-exist with a 50-year-old reality?” he continued. “I don’t know. I just feel sort of like conflicted.”
Despite the qualms about his age, Gaines is extremely grateful for the life he is living, especially the privilege of being a dad to five amazing kids. Though being a parent comes with its difficulties, he is aware of how the role has made him a better person.
“One of the biggest things I’ve learned is how not to be selfish. Caring about someone else more than you care about yourself. And it’s made me a better team player.” he said. “I love watching my kids grow up and try new things. Whether they succeed or fail, just to be their cheerleader on the sideline is the best feeling.”
Throughout their success, Gaines and his wife, Joanna, have kept family at the core of their lives. By acting as parents first, they have cultivated strong relationships with their kids. Now as they enter into adulthood, the couple is focused on being even more real with them.
“The older I’ve gotten, I’ve realized the more humanity these kids can see in me, the more we’re going to connect,” Joanna said. “I want them to see the highs and lows, so when they’re feeling anxieties about school or relationships, they know it’s a safe place for them to come to me.”
