Eddie Murphy just confirmed the new SHREK spinoff will center around his character, Donkey.
ScreenRant recently asked Murphy, “I know SHREK 5 is coming out next year, and you said around this time last year that you had begun recording your lines. Are you done in the booth? Are they just doing the animation right now?”
“No, they’re still doing voiceover stuff. We’re still in the booth, and literally, we’re still doing SHREK,” the actor replied. “We start in September on DONKEY, we’re doing a Donkey one, and that’ll be three years from now, but we’re about two years into SHREK 5. Still in the booth and about to start DONKEY in September.”
While still several years out, fans have a lot of fun to look forward to.
“DONKEY’s going to be like how Puss in Boots had his own movie. Donkey’s going to have his own movie, own little story with his dragon wife and his kids that are half-dragon and half-donkeys,” he added. “They’ve written this funny story. We’re doing that, starting that in September.”
Movieguide® praised PUSS IN BOOTS: THE LAST WISH’s “strong Christian, moral worldview,” giving it a Teddy Bear Award® in 2023.
Working on SHREK movies is a bit unusual, Murphy told Collider: “you don’t know what it is, because you don’t get a script.”
“When you go to do a session, you get like, ‘Okay, here are the scenes that we’re gonna do,’ and maybe sometimes they’ll draw some pictures so you could see a little storyboard,” the actor explained. “But then you just go in and do it, and you don’t know what it’s gonna be like. Then the next session, you just do these, these voice-overs [and] so you don’t know what it’s going to be till you see the whole movie.”

Universal Pictures released a teaser video announcing the cast of SHREK 5 earlier this year.
The video begins with Shrek, Fiona, Donkey and Pinocchio gathered “around the magic mirror and discover that Shrek has become something of an internet sensation. Though the trailer gives away next-to-nothing about the film’s plot, it reaffirms that Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers, and Cameron Diaz are returning. Perhaps the most important part of the trailer, though, is that it reveals that Zendaya will play the role of Shrek and Fiona’s teen daughter,” ScreenRant reported.
As far as a plot line, few details have been revealed for either SHREK 5 or DONKEY. But SHREK 5 is set to release in theaters on Dec. 23, 2026.
