FIXER UPPER Star Chip Gaines Says Raising Children Is “The Honor of His Life”

Got a house that needs to be fixed up?  If the answer is yes, chances are you’ve wanted to give Christian couple Chip and Joanna Gaines a call!

Chip and his wife of sixteen years Joanna captivated audiences with their family values and stupendous home renovations on the HGTV series FIXER UPPER. Since the show premiered in 2012, the Gaines family has taken a brief hiatus from TV life to focus on their family and preparing for their own television network. In between their touristy Magnolia Silos location in Waco, TX, partnerships and entrepreneurial efforts, somehow the Gaines’s manage to find time for the family. Chip Gaines exclusively explained to People magazine about his fatherhood journey just in time for Father’s Day.

“I really wasn’t that guy,” Gaines remembered. “I dated girls [before Joanna] whose goal in life was to get married and have kids.” They had it all planned out, but I was too selfish.” Fast forward nearly fifteen years later, and fatherhood has completely changed him. Last year, Chip and Joanna welcomed their fifth child, a son they named Crew. Their other four children, Drake, Ella, Duke, and Emmie range from preteen age to nine years old. If you were a fan of FIXER UPPER, you might recall that Chip and Joanna were always inviting their children to help with projects to strengthen them as a family and create a healthy work/home balance. So, it’s no question they have their hands full but their commitment to their faith and family is certainly admirable.

Gaines spoke about one of the most valuable things parenthood has taught him, stating, “one of the biggest things I’ve learned is how not to be selfish. Caring about someone else more than you care about yourself. And it’s made me a better team player.” The FIXER UPPER star continued, “I love watching my kids grow up and try new things. Whether they succeed or fail, just to be their cheerleader on the sideline is the best feeling.”

Chip spoke at length about his wife Joanna and her partnership in raising their five children. “To be married to her and raising kids together has been the honor of my life,” Gaines beamed. “I tell my kids this a lot: She’s the one that makes this whole thing go around.” Their kindness and family values have even spread into the secular realms of the media, earning the pair a spot on Time magazine’s Top 100 Influential People of 2019.
