Christian Couple Chip and Joanna Gaines Named Among “Times” Top 100 Influential People

By Tess Farrand, Staff Writer

Audiences fell in love with Chip and Joanna in 2012 with the start of their popular TV show FIXER UPPER. Now seven years later, the Gaines are a household name, not only for their work in design and home improvement, but also their faith. Encouragingly so, their positive influence put them among Time’s Most Influential People.

Time’s display of the “Top 100 Most Influential People of 2019” features a video montage of the honorees and major events from the past year. The honorees are broken into the categories of: pioneers, artists, leaders, and icons. Chip and Joanna fall into the “artist category.”

All the honorees have a snippet about the reason as to why they’re on the list, but it’s written by an admirer/peer which makes it all the more engaging for readers. Chip and Joanna’s snippet was written by Tim Tebow. In it, Tebow states, “Joanna and Chip Gaines are two incredible people with incredible hearts. Through remarkably hard work, Jo and Chip have created a platform to be able to impact lives with extreme generosity: first with their HGTV show, FIXER UPPER, and soon with their own TV network.”

The athlete/movie producer wrote about his personal interactions with the couple, stating, “On FIXER UPPER, when I helped Jo and Chip build an accessible home for a family with two children in wheelchairs, I saw firsthand the genuine passion they have for making a difference in people’s lives. (I also learned that Chip is just as competitive as I am and that Jo is ready to tackle any problems that arise.)”

It would be nearly criminal to speak of the Gaines’ character without mentioning their faith. Tebow concludes, “They are also grounded in a strong faith, which keeps them focused on what truly matters in life. People matter. Loving people matters. And Jo and Chip are amazing at loving people.”

Months ago, Patricia Heaton called out Time for not naming Gary Sinise as their “person of the year” for all his philanthropic efforts. So, it’s a refreshing change of pace to see that people of faith are being recognized for their God-given talents and using the media to encourage and uplift. Another notable media name on the list includes Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson. We can only pray that the Gaines’ influence at Time inspires others to know that Jesus is their ultimate source of joy!

Joanna expressed her gratitude Wednesday morning about the event via Instagram saying, “Woke up this morning feeling like it was all a dream. Thank you @time for including us in the #time100. What an honor to be in the room last night❤️”

Chip also took to social media to be comedic about the honor. “Excuse me.. Mr. @ninja!! Ask your grandma who I am. It will buy you some major brownie points. #imAbigDealWithThe60andOverCrowd #Time100
