PGA champion Scottie Scheffler plays golf for one reason only: “To glorify God.”

“I think it always goes back to the why,” Scheffler said, speaking at a College Golf Fellowship event, which “is a campus ministry that disciples college golfers and helps them navigate the pressure of elite competition,” per Relevant Magazine. “When I think about golf, and why do I play golf? I play golf to glorify God.”

“It’s not bad to have the desire to want to be really good at something,” he continued. “It’s just the why. It’s like, do I want to be a really good golfer so that I can become famous or do I want to become a really good golfer to glorify God?”

Scheffler went on to talk about how he honors God even through practices.

“When I go out and practice, I’m glorifying God by going out and practicing,” he shared. “I want to get the most out of that time with my practice.”

In 2022, Scheffler won The Masters. After the tournament, he told the media the reason why he plays, a foundation that hasn’t changed.

“The reason why I play golf is I’m trying to glorify God and all that He’s done in my life. That all goes back to my faith,” he told the media.

One of the biggest anchors in his faith is his wife, Meredith.

“Like Meredith told me this morning, she says, ‘If you win this golf tournament today, if you lose this golf tournament by 10 shots if you never win another golf tournament again,’ she goes, ‘I’m still going to love you, you’re still going to be the same person, Jesus loves you, and nothing changes,’” Scheffler explained. “And all I’m trying to do is glorify God, and that’s why I’m here, and that’s why I’m in this position.”

“Every day when we go out there, Meredith always prays for peace, because that’s what I want to feel on the golf course, is peace and have fun and just feel His presence,” he continued. “So that’s her prayer every day. That’s my prayer, and I really felt that today. I felt at peace.”

Whether you’re an athlete, a professional or a stay-at-home mom, God calls us to do everything for His glory. Like Scheffler, let’s keep our focus on Him and surround ourselves with people who will point us back to Him when we need it.
