What Is a Miracle?

“For nothing is impossible with God.” Luke 1:37

“And Jesus said to him, ‘If you can? All things are possible to him who believes.’” Mark 9:23

In the Bible, the word “miracle” means “sign” (or “billboard”) (Greek sēmeion) or a “wonder” (from the Latin “miraculum”), or both.

So, a miracle is a sign pointing towards the wonder of God. For most people, a miracle suggests God’s supernatural intervention that surpasses the power of the natural world. However, miracles are much more common than His supernatural intervention:

“For His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen since the creation of the world, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse.”

– Romans 1:20

The biblical perspective is that everything is created, sustained and governed by God, so there is no distinction between the natural and supernatural.

The Gospel of John uses the word “sign” because the miracles performed by Jesus are signs that unveil the glory and power of God.

Miracles may happen quickly, over time or much later than our prayers.

Before they happen, His supernatural intervention miracles appear to be impossible, such as the healing of an incurable disease. After they happen, many people will try to explain them away and attribute them to unique and unexpected events…or just accept them as ordinary events. However, before the miracle happens, those who pray know that a miracle is impossible without God’s intervention.

Also, the One Triune God impacts our lives miraculously far more often than we realize. If, however, we believe that miracles still occur and thank God for all the little miracles in our lives, we will often experience more of His divine sovereign grace.

God the Father in the name of Jesus Christ through the power of His Holy Spirit is still willing and able to do miracles. His miracles are recorded in His Word and in the lives of the Christians throughout history. He is all powerful; He is Love; and, He loves you and me. His desire to respond to all of us who call on the Name of Jesus Christ hasn’t changed (See Mark 1:40-43).

Of course, our need for miracles hasn’t changed, even though we seem to have better medicine, incredible technical advances and better living conditions. People battle with countless problems; including: incurable diseases, anxiety, stress, accidents, poverty, mental disorders, broken marriages, trials, tribulations, riots, and death. Thus, people have a desperate need for Jesus Christ. (See Matthew 9:35-38, Matthew 15:32-38)

People still want to see what Jesus Christ can do. He is glorified by revealing His power and love in many ways, including miracles. Seeing Jesus move in our lives helps us put our faith in Him and receive life’s greatest of miracles — salvation, being born again with eternal life through the forgiveness of all our sin (Matthew 15:29-31).

Even so, miracles do not depend on how great our faith is, but how great God is. It is better to have a little faith in a great God, than a lot of faith in a little god. So, do not worry about having a little faith. All things are possible with the one true God, who created everything, who is all powerful, who has all authority, who knows everything, who is everywhere with us.

Therefore:

  1. Have faith in Christ’s ability and willingness to do His common and His supernatural intervention miracles today. Matthew 13:54-58; Hebrews 11:1,2, 6
  2. Pray for His glory to be revealed so believers would be strengthened in their faith and the lost won to Christ.

“I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with my Father. You can ask for anything in my Name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father: Yes, ask me for anything in my Name, and I will do it.”

– John 14:12-14

  1. Trust in Christ’s divine wisdom and goodness as to when and what situations He wants to make a miracle happen. He knows best what will glorify Him the most.

When Jesus healed the lepers, he asked them to report on what happened to them. Only one did. With that in mind, I am reporting on my favorite set of impossible miracles ordained by God alone in the name of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit.
