Disney To ‘Take Action’ Against Texas Bill That Would Protect Children

Disney joined Hollywood’s candid disapproval of a recent Texas Gov. Greg Abbott order, which seeks to protect children by criminalizing sex-change surgeries performed on children.

After a new proposition from Abbott regarding “child abuse” by gender-affirming care for transgender children, some outlets want Hollywood to fully condemn Texas’ leadership.

On Feb. 22, Abbott wrote to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Commissioner Jaime Masters to “conduct a prompt and thorough investigation of any reported instances of these abusive procedures in the State of Texas.”

As one of the largest and most lucrative studios in media today, Disney leadership claimed they would “take action” to oppose the Texas order and Florida’s recently passed Parents Rights in Education bill.

The Daily Wire reported

The meeting began with Disney CEO Bob Chapek reiterating his apologies for the company’s initial refusal to take a public stand against Florida legislation that would ban classroom discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity with kindergarten- to third-graders enrolled in public schools. According to the insider, Chapek said that he appreciates the feedback he’s received from LGBTQIA+ employees and admitted that he made mistakes in addressing the “Parents Rights in Education” bill, but he said that “the pain this community experienced was not just about this one piece of legislation but about not being there anytime this community has been hurt.”

Chapek then said that Disney leadership will be going on a “listening tour” of gay, transgender, and non-binary employees.

According to Disney’s Chief Human Resources Officer Paul Richardson, the company signed on to the Human Rights Campaign, opposing the Texas bill.

“Because of our presence in Texas,” Richardson said. “We want you to know that we’ve signed on to the Human Rights Campaign’s letter opposing the Texas bill that criminalizes parents who provide for their transgender children gender affirming care.”

Despite some internal pressure from Pixar employees—specifically regarding the Florida bill—other Disney employees criticized the company’s actions.

“These activist employees and outside organizations recognize Disney’s cultural significance,” a Disney employee told The Daily Wire after a meeting with staffers. “They want to use the company to make an end-run around parents through content creation and political pressure. They see it as their mission to rescue the next generation from their conservative parents.”

“This is a complete institutional takeover. Disney is lost,” the employee concluded after Disney leadership’s announcement.

Movieguide® previously reported on a letter written by Pixar employees to Disney executives:

The letter of outrage accused Disney of cutting intimate scenes between same-sex characters from their children’s movies.

“We at Pixar have personally witnessed beautiful stories, full of diverse characters, come back from Disney corporate reviews shaved down to crumbs of what they once were,” the letter, issued on March 9, read. “Even if creating LGBTQIA+ content was the answer to fixing the discriminatory legislation in the world, we are being barred from creating it.”

The letter also stated that Disney Company leadership censored “overtly gay affection” in its feature-length movies.

The uproar from Pixar employees comes after Florida governor Ron DeSantis passed a parental rights bill that opposition called the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.

While the bill may protect children in school for a time, it is clear that Disney is finally folding under internal and external pressure from the LGBTQIA+ community.

In the past, Disney leadership understood that to cut intimate same-sex affection in their projects opens their movies up to the majority audience.

Discernment is essential for parents now more than ever. While Disney executives held their ground for a time, they could put innocent minds in danger with future content.
