Hilary Duff Says Disney+ Cancelled Lizzie McGuire Reboot Over Lack of Family-Friendly Content

By Allyson Vannatta, Staff Writer

Hilary Duff announced via Instagram that Disney+ pulled the plug on the LIZZIE MCGUIRE reboot due to content exceeding a PG rating.

Rumors had been swirling that the new take on the old character was not family-friendly enough to live under the Disney+ banner, and those rumors seem to be true.

Duff posted on Instagram and said she “Was incredibly excited to launch ‘Lizzie’ on D+ and my passion remains!”

She continued,

“However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with LIZZIE who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her. I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30 year old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating. It’s important to me that just as her experiences as a preteen/teenager navigating life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable.”

The post ended with, “It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show to Hulu, if they were interested, and I could bring this beloved character to life again.”

This news comes on the heels of the spinoff LOVE, VICTOR moving to Hulu last month for the same reasons.

Movieguide® previously reported, “Disney felt many issues explored on the show, including alcohol use and sexual exploration, would not fit in with the family-friendly content on Disney Plus.”

Contrary to popular opinion, adult content doesn’t necessarily make a show or movie succeed. Over the course of Movieguide®’s 40 years in the entertainment industry, we’ve found family-friendly content that contains Christian and biblical themes perform better. If Disney truly wanted this reboot to succeed, they would ensure the content could stay within a PG rating.
