Husband and wife — and costars! —Patricia Heaton and David Hunt reflected on the theme of “unconditional love” that runs through their latest movie, MERV.
“The premise of the movie is that Charlie Cox and Zooey Deschanel have broken up, but they’re still seeing each other because they share custody of their dog,” Heaton explained during an interview with Movieguide®. “And so, as their parents, we miss that they’re not together. And yet, you can’t tell your adult children what to do…you want [the] best for your kid and you’re being supportive of them, but you can’t really tell them what to do, and you just have to model the benefits of a long term relationship.”

Hunt agreed, sharing that his character has “a very beautiful relationship” with his onscreen son and wife as he recovers from a heart attack.
“The guy was so vulnerable, and I think that idea of vulnerability kind of permeated our family dynamic,” he continued.
MERV’s producer, Matthew Baer, spoke to The Collision about the movie’s themes of family and love, saying he hopes MERV “brings a family together to witness a story that is about family…Love and family come in different forms, but when glued together, they can change the world.”
The couple also spoke about how their faith impacts the types of roles they choose to take.
“We’re looking for realistically portrayed situations of the human condition,” Heaton shared. “We’re Christians and we have a hopeful view of humanity in light of God’s love for us.”
Hunt added, “It’s really about the authenticity of the material….Nothing else really matters. We have to love each other and be kind to each other, because nothing else really matters, in the end.”
Heaton and Hunt have previously spoken about their mission to be part of faith-filled projects, as well as their dedication to being good examples for their children.
“I think so many people are lost today, feeling like they don’t know why they’re here, and they’re kind of floundering,” Heaton told the Christian Post. “If you understand that God created you for a purpose, then you can rest in that knowledge and stay open to seeking His will for yourself.”
Hunt added, “Don’t exclude your kids from the world, because they will be in the world — but they’re not necessarily of the world. Go out and spread the Gospel, if possible, without words. People are watching you, how you behave; they’re looking at your character.”
MERV premieres on Amazon Prime on Dec. 10.
