Skillet frontman John Cooper recalled the promise he made with his mom to never get mad at God as she struggled with, and eventually succumbed to, a years-long battle with cancer.

“My mom, who was this spiritual warrior in my life, she got cancer when I was 12. She fought cancer for three years, off and on, and she was just a warrior. My mom would always tell me, ‘If I don’t get healed, you can’t be mad at God. God is always good. Everything He does is right. Everything He does is for a purpose. And He works all things together for the good of those who love Christ according to his purpose,’” Cooper told “See The Kingdom” podcast. “My mom died when I was 15, and I struggled, but I never got mad at God because of my mom.”

Praise the Lord for the amazing faith of Cooper’s mother and the way that she helped him see His goodness even in the darkest of times. Cooper previously shared how his mother instilled a strong faith in him from an early age which has served him all his life.

I have to give my mom credit because my mom taught me about the Lord. When I was a kid, she would read the Bible to me… when I was one, two and three years old, I would constantly read the Bible. My mom would make us pray together, she’d make us Bible study [and] memorize scripture,” Cooper told Movieguide®. “So I don’t remember a day in my life when I wasn’t memorizing scripture.”

“I came to know Jesus when I was five years old, and I tell that story to encourage moms and dads who may be watching,” he continued. “I have two kids of my own, and what you do matters. Teaching your kids matters a lot. What your kids watch matters. What your kids listen to matters. And so, that’s a big deal.”

Now Cooper serves as a Christian voice in the rock music space as the lead singer of the band Skillet. His band looks to reach fans of rock music with the Gospel by creating Christians songs in the genre they enjoy.

“I write songs, and I want to help people through chaos,” Cooper previously told Shannon Bream. “I want to help people through darkness. And what they don’t understand is that people in America have never experienced the kind of chaos that we are experiencing right now.”

Thank the Lord Cooper was true to his promise to his mother and understood that her battle with cancer was for good, allowing himself to continue his strong relationship with the Lord rather than becoming mad and bitter toward Him.
