Miami Hurricanes offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa explained how the Parable of the Talents helps him play football for Jesus.
“The Parable of the Talents. He gave gifts to what, three? One of them buried it. He didn’t want to use it. When I think about that, God gave me this talent, I’m gonna use it to the fullest, and I’m gonna use it to glorify Him, because now, according to that story, He blessed the other two with many more talents,” the offensive tackle said on an episode of “The Walk” podcast.
“So if I can glorify him with this talent, maybe He can give me some more talents that I can glorify Him with, and that has been the main goal,” Mauigoa continued. “I mean, starting from that day that I fell in love with Jesus, it changed my whole perspective. Started from fame. I was doing football, like I said, with my brothers. It became with fame to now glorifying the Lord and Savior.”

Mauigoa announced at the end of last month his decision to enter into the NFL draft.
“First and foremost. I want to thank our Heavenly Father for bringing me all this way,” the athlete began in his announcement. “Everything You have put me through has gotten me to this point. I can’t do anything without You. Philippians 4:13. Secondly. I want to thank my family for the everlasting support system throughout my career. My brothers and sisters. Thank you for paving the way for me. God knows if y’all weren’t athletic and good at what y’all did. I wouldn’t be as competitive. To my parents. Thank you for the sacrifices y’all made for me: it is the reason why all of this is possible.”
“Shoutout to my dad. Fa’alialia Mauigoa, the best coach there is. All the runs and drills after a hard practice have paid off because of your vision,” he continued. “To St. Thomas Aquinas (San Bernardino) and IMG Academy, thank you for taking a chance on someone that barely spoke English.”
“Lastly, the University of Miami, thank you for giving me the best 3 years of my life. Coach Cristobal and Coach Mirabal, thank you for giving me a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” Mauigoa concluded. “The hard work and the culture y’all have instilled in me are something I will carry on for the rest of my life. ‘How you do anything is how you do everything.’ To my teammates who became brothers. Thank you for pushing and helping me be the best version of myself. #stillbleeding. Keep working and don’t get satisfied. Love y’all more than ever.”
Reuters reported, “Mauigoa is expected to be among the top five selections, perhaps as high as No. 3.”
Just as Mauigoa turns to the Parable of the Talents as motivation to use the gifts and abilities for God, we should each do the same.
