‘I’m Like Any Other Parent, I’m Trying To Figure It Out’: Kevin Costner Opens Up About Fatherhood

By Movieguide® Contributor

Actor Kevin Costner recently opened up about how important being a father is to him, and how he parents his seven kids.

Costner and his wife of 18 years, Christine, share three children: Cayden, 15, Hayes, 13, and Grace, 12. The actor also has four older children from previous relationships, daughters Annie and Lily, and sons Joe and Liam.

The MACFARLAND USA star spoke about his approach to being a dad; especially one with a career that takes him away from home often.

“You’ve got to get down on the ground and play with them,” Costner said of raising his kids. “And you teach them to be independent — and the sad part about that is they become that. I’m like any other parent: I’m trying to figure it out.”

He continued, “I work as a provider. I’m a father and I’m a husband, but the world doesn’t revolve around me. When I’m not making a movie, I’m living and on the freeway with my wife, getting the kids to their stuff or I’m waiting for them to come out of a party. I’m just twiddling my thumbs. People have a wrong idea about how my life works.”

He also revealed that son Hayes is joining him on set for one of his upcoming projects, a four-part Western called HORIZON.

“He’s very good,” Costner shared. “But I kind of did it on purpose, so he could be hanging out with me. And the same thing for Cayden, same thing for Grace. ‘This is really neat. You should come be with me.'”

Movieguide® previously reported on Costner’s marriage and home life:

Kevin Costner said that his marriage to wife Christine is stronger after quarantine and so is his family.

“Our partnership has really come into focus about what we do for each other and how we deal with our family,” Costner told PEOPLE.

Costner also told PEOPLE that saying “sorry” is healthy for marriage.

“Maybe [the key to communication is] the ability to say you’re sorry,” said Costner. “I know that sounds so simple. If you’re willing to tell somebody that you love them, are you also willing to say you’re sorry? You need to, even when you think you’re in the right.”

The HIDDEN FIGURES actor added, “I’m really comfortable with my family. I’m really comfortable with my children.”

Costner and Christine have three children together: Hayes, Grace and Cayden.

Costner also has four grown children from a previous marriage and relationship: Annie, Liam, Joe and Lily. Annie and Lily are in the entertainment business as a director and actress respectively.

“As [my] children interact together, there’s always this little bit of, ‘Do you care for us now as much as you do them?’” Costner said in an interview with Mom.com.

The SWING VOTE actor continued, “That’s just a natural thing that happens, and you have to talk about how big love is. The ability to be able to love somebody else doesn’t mean there’s less love for you.”
