In a strong exhortation about the true meaning of life, Jim Caviezel reminded us that the only thing that matters on this earth is our relationship with the Lord and how we live that out.
“My commandment to you is this, you love one another just as I have loved you, and if that doesn’t grab you, maybe this one will,” Caviezel said, reciting a poem. “Your name may not appear down in this world’s hall of fame. In fact, you may be so unknown that no one knows your name. The Oscars and the praise of men may never come your way, but don’t forget God has rewards that He’ll hand out someday.”

“This crowd on earth, they will soon forget when you’re not at the top. They will cheer like mad until you fall and then their praise will stop,” he continued. “Not God. He never does forget, and in His hall of fame by just believing in His son, forever there’s your name. I tell you friend, I wouldn’t trade my name however small that’s written there beyond the stars in that celestial hall. For all the famous names on earth or the glory that they share, I’d rather be unknown here and have my name up there. God bless you.”
While Caviezel has enjoyed a successful acting career, he understands that none of the praise he has received means anything; the only thing that matters is what the Lord thinks. He doesn’t claim any credit for his success either, as his acting ability was gifted to him by the Lord.
“I realized that God had gotten me into this business, that my talent came from God, not from men,” he recalled telling Mel Gibson before starting work on THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. “And so I said, ‘Look, man, we’re all called to carry our own cross. If you don’t pick up and carry your cross, you will be crushed by the weight of it.’”
His works like THE PASSION and SOUND OF FREEDOM have greatly impacted the kingdom and serve as important reminders of how movies can cause real-life change. Many people around this time of year turn to THE PASSION to understand what Easter means. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:
THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST is a must-see movie, beautifully directed, powerfully acted, and with terrific sound. Filmed in Latin and Aramaic, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST has a foreign sensibility. The violence and the glee of the Romans who were scourging Jesus highlight the demonic quality of the battle Jesus was fighting. Those who see it will understand, perhaps for the first time, the price that Jesus paid to forgive us our sins. This is real grace, not cheap grace.
It is amazing how Caviezel stays true to his Christian beliefs as a recognizable actor, willing to give up everything he has if it means following Christ better.
