For KING & COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone says opposites might attract, but “commonality” in a relationship is a good thing.

“Opposites attract but don’t necessarily make great life partners,” he said in a recent Instagram video. “There’s a beauty to having sort of varying opinions on things, but what we [he and wife Moriah] have found — and I’m only speaking from experience — is that actual commonality, like, the way you see God, the way you see life, the things you love and enjoy doing; those pieces are actually the glue that keeps you intact.”

Smallbone added, “Yes, there’s obviously personality differences…and so I’m not speaking against that, but that commonality and that similarity has been a beautiful thing for us.”

Moriah, who is also a musician, spoke to HOPE 103.2 about their relationship in 2020. She shared that she saved their first kiss for their wedding day, and Smallbone “didn’t make me feel silly over it.”

“The whole ‘no kissing’ thing was sort of a defense mechanism that I was able to use to hold myself accountable for one, but to also kind of test the guy’s heart a bit [and see how] he responded to those boundaries,” she added

Speaking about their own standards for their marriage, Moriah said, “[Joel] always would say, ‘Our parents’ ceiling has to become our floor’…We have to take [what they’ve taught us] and build on it. Things as simple as, ‘We’re going to communicate. We’re going to use words and we’re going to communicate respectfully… and when we argue we’re not going to run away, or walk away and lock the other person out.”

“Also externally, how we present ourselves as a couple to the community around us — [Joel’s] taught me a lot about what it means to love people and respect people, and be gracious to people,” she continued.

For KING & COUNTRY brought the lessons they’ve learned about love to their latest single, “Ever & Ever Before.”

“This song isn’t about the fireworks at the beginning,” Smallbone said in a statement about the track. “It’s about the long haul, and choosing to choose each other again and again.”

Brother and bandmate Luke Smallbone added, “‘Ever & Ever Before’ feels like a reflection and a celebration of the years of marriage we’ve shared with our wives. It just keeps getting better and better with time, and to have both MŌRIAH and Courtney [his wife] lend their voices once more to a project like this is a special moment for us.”

While opposites might attract at the start, the Smallbones are sharing the importance of “commonality” and shared values  in a long term relationship.
