‘Hurry and Love are Incompatible’: John Mark Comer on Following Jesus
By Movieguide® Contributor
Sadie Robertson Huff recently sat down with author and pastor John Mark Comer to talk about how “hurry” distracts us from following Jesus and loving others well.
“[Christian philosopher Dallas Willard] said ‘Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day.’ Which there’s so many interesting things about that one that he named hurry as the great enemy,” Comer said on Huff’s “WHOA That’s Good” podcast.
He continued, “Our response to hurry can’t be neutral either…we have to fight back if we have any desire to live a slower life at the pace of Jesus that is more conducive to becoming a person of love.”
“Hurry and love are incompatible,” Comer said. “When I am in a hurry, I am not loving and gentle and patient and kind.”
He referenced 1 Corinthians 13, which says, “Love is patient.” Comer emphasizes that patience means “not hurried.”
He explored this topic further in his 2019 book, “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: How to Stay Emotionally Healthy and Spiritually Alive in the Chaos of the Modern World.”
“The reality is, most of us are just too busy to live an emotionally healthy and spirituality vibrant life. Hurry is incompatible with the way of Jesus,” he says of the book. “The love, joy, and peace that form the nucleus of Jesus’ kingdom are all impossible in a life of speed. We must, as Willard went on to say, ‘Ruthlessly eliminate hurry.’”
He’s releasing a new book this month called “Practicing the Way: Be with Jesus, Become like Him, Do as He Did.”
“I intended to write this immediately after The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry (in so many ways, that book was a set up for THIS book) but wanted to give it a little more time to simmer in my heart,” Comer posted on Instagram.
“I have come to deeply believe that apprenticeship to Jesus is designed not as an optional add on to ‘Christianity,’ but as the animating center of all life,” he wrote. “Whether you are brand new to following Jesus, been at it longer than I’ve been alive, or just considering him for the first time, I pray this book is helpful.”
“Practicing the Way” will be available Jan. 16, 2024.
Movieguide® recently reported on Huff:
Sadie Robertson Huff opened up this year’s Passion Conference with an inspiring message about why we can believe in the existence of God…
During her sermon, the DUCK DYNASTY star shared how a fan once asked her to prove the reality of God…
“Because of the Bible,” Huff responded. She explained how the Word of God is alive and active today.
“When Josiah read the Word for himself, it changed him,” she said. “I know the Word is not lost in our day because I’m holding the Word and literally on my phone, I have the Word, and we all have Bibles in here. But I just wonder, although we have the Word, and it’s not technically lost, has it been lost on us? Has the value, has the power, has the gravity of the story been lost on us?”
