LILO & STICH already broke a record by being the highest-grossing movie to ever debut on Memorial Day weekend, and now it has soared past $775 million, making it the third movie this year to do so.

Its box office numbers currently sit at $775.8 million worldwide. It made $339.3 million in America and $436.5 million overseas, across more than 40 countries, Screen Rant reported.

It comes in third in overall profits this year following A MINECRAFT MOVIE ($954.1 million), and Chinese animation NE ZHA 2 ($1.899 billion). It’s no surprise that the top three most successful movies of the year are all targeted for families. Though the movies here aren’t 100% wholesome, family movies don’t exclude any groups and tend to display more moral values than other films. Therefore, they sell more tickets.

LILO & STITCH’s rise to the top is especially remarkable because it only had $750 million on Sunday, so it made $25 million over the span of three weekdays. It’s rare for a movie to do so well on weekdays this long after its debut date. It’s possible that it could make over $1 billion before it leaves theaters.

The movie is currently No. 6 on the chart of Disney’s top ten highest-grossing live-action remakes. It will likely make it at least to the No. 4 spot, outdoing THE JUNGLE BOOK and ALICE IN WONDERLAND.

Movieguide®’s review of LILO & STITCH reads: “The live action LILO & STITCH is lots of fun, with touching moments of rescue and redemption…Eventually, Lilo’s love and devotion change Stitch’s heart, allowing him to feel love and want to be part of her family…So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.”

The movie, directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, was originally marked to stream on Disney+, but the decision changed in 2024, and it was given a theater release date.

“I and the other filmmakers always believed that it could be a big, perfect summer blockbuster to go see on a huge screen,” Fleischer Camp told Variety. “I’m proud of how hard it delivers on that. It’s super funny, it’s action-packed, and it’s super emotional.”

Flescher-Camp also directed MARCEL THE SHELL WITH SHOES ON and compares Stitch to Marcel.

“Stitch also has this unusual depth of emotion to him. I always related him to Marcel, a little bit in that way where it felt like these are both unusual protagonists who are trying to make their way in this world that wasn’t made for them,” he said. “They’re funny and cute, but have this deep well of sadness and emotion, and everyone can relate to that.”

“Everyone can also relate to Stitch, who’s this chaos goblin built for destruction, and is someone who’s reckoning with the fact that, ‘Oh my gosh, I break everything I touch, even when my heart’s in the right place,’” he said.

The director says the movie’s success in “pretty unbelievable,” but he may continue to be amazed. The movie is still expected to grow its box office numbers in its last weeks in theaters.
