Family-friendly MUFASA: THE LION KING dominated at the box office over MLK weekend, beating out major studio comedy and horror movies.
MUFASA made an estimated $15.5 million over the holiday weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter. For context, second runner-up, comedy ONE OF THEM DAYS, pulled in $14.2 million over the same weekend, while horror movie WOLF MAN earned $12.5 million.
This latest box office haul is just a continuation of MUFASA’s winning streak. The movie is “only the second film in 15 years to jump the $200 million domestically despite opening to less than $40 million,” THR reported.
Overall, MUFASA has made $591,998,338 at the domestic and worldwide box office, according to Box Office Mojo.
The movie’s success proves, once again, that a family-friendly movie will win out at the box office and with audiences every time.
Speaking about Disney’s year of success — INSIDE OUT 2 and MOANA 2 were both major earners at the box office in 2024 — Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, said, “We remain focused on quality while making sure we have the right volume across theatrical and streaming, and the results speak for themselves.”

Forbes reported that the song will debut on Billboard’s Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart, which could lead to a longer life on the charts. Despite the song’s popularity, the outlet explained that “I Always Wanted A Brother” will not be competing for Best Original Song at this year’s Oscars ceremony.
“Tell Me It’s You,” another song from MUFASA, “is currently on the shortlist for a nomination,” Forbes wrote, adding that an Oscar for the song would complete composer Lin-Manuel Miranda’s EGOT journey.
