Pat Boone’s Daughter Lindy Releases Debut Single ‘Wordlayer’

After a lifetime in the music industry, Lindy Boone is finally following in her father’s footsteps.

“I’ve been in the music business my whole life, but I had never been motivated to write a song,” the daughter of music icon Pat Boone recently told PEOPLE.

However, after receiving the chance to write with a Nashville songwriter as part of a Mother’s Day gift, Lindy found herself drawn to the word “wordlayer.”

It first came to her following a tragic accident. In 2001, her son Ryan fell through a skylight onto a cement floor and suffered a traumatic brain injury.

“It was unimaginable,” she explained. “It is the kind of thing that you can only absorb a little at a time. I went into shock basically.”

Ryan survived, but doctors told the family he would face challenges for the rest of his life. As Lindy contemplated the uncertainty her family was facing, she kept thinking, “Wordlayer.”

“I guess that word just came to be because I had seen the value of speaking words and the energy that is part of the words that go out,” she said. “It just seemed to me that it was like laying bricks. It’s like building a foundation with your words.”

Now, “Wordlayer” is the title of Lindy’s debut single, which she recorded with sisters Cherry, Debby and Laury.

“People are recognizing the truth in the message,” Lindy shared. “People need to realize that words do hurt, and they can also heal. We have the power to determine whether our words are going to be part of the answer or part of the problem. So, we shouldn’t be flippant about that. We should be very intentional when we choose our words.”

Proceeds from “Wordlayer” will go towards Ryan’s Reach, a non-profit the Boone family started “to provide aid and support to brain injured individuals and their families,” per the organization’s website.

Lindy is also now thinking about releasing an album and is already working on her next song.

“I didn’t know I could write songs, but they come out of a personal place in my heart and then they won’t let me go,” she said in an interview with Woman’s World. “There’s a song that I’m working on called ‘It’s Not a Wasted Life.’ That’s something my son Ryan said in prayer one night.”

She recalled, “He goes, ‘It’s not a wasted life,’ and I thought, ‘No it isn’t. His life is so important and so meaningful.’ He’s still in a wheelchair. He still has the brain injury. It’s been 22 years since his accident and he has lived with us all this time with a caregiver 24/7, but his life is making a difference. It makes a difference through ripple effects. We started the non-profit because of what we’ve gone through and sometimes when you suffer, you understand the suffering of others like you never had before.”
