New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye declares that faith — not football — is the most important part of his life.
“I try to take advantage of this platform that I’ve been given,” Maye told the media in preparation for Super Bowl LX, “given by the good Lord. I try to have a constant reminder that you’re my purpose, you’re my passion, and always finding something that I was trying to chase. I was trying to chase the passion in life, and not having it turn out to be football, and knowing that there’s always been a constant in my life, and that’s been my faith.”
“You know, knowing that no matter at any time, you know highs, lows, times where I feel like I need prayers, sometimes where I feel like I’m at the highest moments to talk and knowing that my relationship with the Lord, and you know, a follower of Jesus Christ is the biggest thing in my life,” the athlete said of his life goal, before adding, “keeping that at number one, and knowing that that is what’s got me here and what helps me get here, and what I can shine light on to others, and knowing that hopefully…I can help lead them to Jesus Christ, and knowing that how their life can change and what it can do for them.”
“Being a follower of Jesus Christ is the biggest thing in my life.”

When asked about his heroes, Maye pointed to his brothers.
Who are you rooting for?
“My hero will probably be my older brothers,” he said. “I think my heroes just growing up with them, having somebody, you know, that’s close to me, you know, kind of live their own lives, and I just learn from them and be the youngest brother and have the opportunity to kind of have something to chase. I was chasing my older brothers; they all had a passion. I was just trying to find a passion for myself that I could kind of follow them and have it be football, and now I’m here.”
His biggest cheerleader is his wife, Ann Michael, who he married last year. In fact, the 23-year-old loves marriage so much that he hopes his teammates follow his lead.
“My teammates have a right to do whatever they choose,” Maye said. “I definitely would advise them to eventually get married. It’s one of the best things in life. It’s one of the best things I’ve experienced in my life. There’s no better feeling than coming home to a wife that loves you and cares for you and worried about your best interests.”
“I know my teammates, some of them are experiencing different parts of their life in what stages. But I chose to get married young and I don’t regret it one bit,” he added.
Maye and the Patriots will face off against the Seattle Seahawks at Super Bowl LX on Sunday, Feb. 8. And while the quarterback hopes to add a ring to his resume, he ultimately wants to honor God and shine His light for all to see.
