Christian worship singer Seph Schlueter knows first-hand what it is like to go through something really difficult.
Last year, he and his wife lost their daughter, who they name Charlotte Davy, when his wife was 20 weeks pregnant with her. Schlueter told Crosswalk Headlines about how Charlotte’s tragic death shifted how he views even his own music.
“It’s about praising God through your pain. It’s about praising God through the midst of suffering, and how that’s a special gift that we can give on this side [of heaven], that we can’t on that side,” he said of his new song titled “This Side of Heaven.”
Interestingly enough, the song was not even written about him but for a co-writer going through a difficult time.
“[But] all of a sudden it became a lifeline for me,” he said. “I can still praise you in this pain, God, and in the midst of mystery — I don’t understand why, but I’m still gonna give you this gift. And so it took on a totally different meaning.”
That song and several others appear on his new album Counting My Blessings.
Track “Won’t Start Now” came from “a place of just seeing God’s faithfulness and seeing His presence, and seeing the ways that, like, He always showed up, and it was awesome,” the singer said.
Even though his daughter’s death makes it harder to sing “Won’t Start Now,” he says that’s why music like it is so important.
“…because it’s not about how you feel — it’s about the truth of His Word. And so sometimes we need those reminders in places [when] we don’t quite feel it, so we can go, ‘Man, I don’t feel this, but this is the truth.’ And so even that song kind of came on from a whole different meaning,” he said.

Schlueter taking his new songs on the road, announcing a second part to his Counting My Blessings Tour.
“I had such a blast on my spring tour that I just figured I had to do it again,” he posted on Instagram. “Okay, so coming this fall, the second leg of the ‘Counting My Blessings’ tour is coming, and I am so excited for these nights. We’re going to worship the Lord, gather together as a church and just let the Spirit move in powerful and transformational ways.”
Schlueter’s story is a reminder that no matter how difficult a circumstance is, God can use our broken story and hardship to make something beautiful.
