SOUND OF FREEDOM Among 2023’s Top 10 Movies

By Movieguide® Contributor

2023’s surprise hit SOUND OF FREEDOM made a major impact at the summer box office, surpassing Hollywood’s expectations to compete with other big-name productions.

“Released in the height of summer, SOUND OF FREEDOM, a low-budget drama about a former government agent rescuing child sex trafficking victims, was able to compete against the latest MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE and TRANSFORMERS films,” Variety reported.

“Released by Utah-based Angel Studios, SOUND OF FREEDOM relied heavily on faith-based crowds, encouraging audience members to ‘pay it forward’ by buying tickets for others to see the movie. It also used crowdfunding to finance the film’s distribution and marketing,” Variety continued.

SOUND OF FREEDOM ranked among the top 10 highest-grossing movies of 2023.

It earned $184,177,725, surpassing the TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR ($179,428,838), INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY ($174,480,468) and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE-DEAD RECKONING PART ONE ($172,135,383).

Box Office Pro commented on what the entertainment industry can learn from its surprising success.

“We need to single out the grassroots marketing campaign for something like SOUND OF FREEDOM, a title none of us expected to hit the way it did and ended up cracking the top 10 domestically,” the article said.

“This movie came out of nowhere, released over a crowded July 4 weekend, and broke out through word of mouth and the support of independent theater owners. Hometown exhibitors were crucial to this film’s success. It’s an essential lesson to the rest of the industry: instead of alienating independent cinema owners and making their lives impossible, if you reach out and work with them—give them everything they need to make your film a success—they will work as hard as they can to make sure the film succeeds,” Box Office Pro added.

Movieguide® previously reported on SOUND OF FREEDOM’s international success:

SOUND OF FREEDOM is officially No. 1 in 18 countries across Latin America.

“The domestic box office performance on SOUND OF FREEDOM has been an incredible success story, but some industry experts have argued our film would not be able to translate this success overseas,” Jared Geesey, the Chief Distribution Officer at Angel Studios, shared in a press release. “We’re grateful to our fans for proving them wrong, and making us the number one movie in Latin America…”

SOUND OF FREEDOM opened at No. 1 in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Belize, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina and the Dominican Republic.

The movie is dominating box offices across the globe, claiming the top box office spot in New Zealand and the No. 2 spots in Australia and South Africa. SOUND OF FREEDOM opened at No. 4 in the United Kingdom.
