SOUND OF FREEDOM Dominates Latin American Box Office
By Movieguide® Contributor
SOUND OF FREEDOM is officially No. 1 in 18 countries across Latin America.
“The domestic box office performance on SOUND OF FREEDOM has been an incredible success story, but some industry experts have argued our film would not be able to translate this success overseas,” Jared Geesey, the Chief Distribution Officer at Angel Studios, shared in a press release. “We’re grateful to our fans for proving them wrong, and making us the number one movie in Latin America.”
He continued, “We’re seeing packed theaters, standing ovations, widespread enthusiasm, and strong word-of-mouth from Buenos Aires to Mexico City to Bogota to Caracas, Lima, and beyond. We set a goal of reaching 2 million in advance ticket sales — which took a full week in the US — and reached that goal in just four days in Latin America. This film is fast-becoming a global movement for change.”
SOUND OF FREEDOM opened at No. 1 in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Belize, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina and the Dominican Republic.
The movie is dominating box offices across the globe, claiming the top box office spot in New Zealand and the No. 2 spots in Australia and South Africa. SOUND OF FREEDOM opened at No. 4 in the United Kingdom.
SOUND OF FREEDOM has been one of the summer’s most successful movies, making over $180 million at the domestic box office, according to Hollywood in Toto.
Newsweek reported that the movie has made over $7.5 million at the global box office since its opening.
Movieguide® previously reported on SOUND OF FREEDOM’s box office success:
Since the movie’s debut July 4, SOUND OF FREEDOM has made history.
The movie has grossed more than $100 million in the box office in less than three weeks.
The head of theatrical distribution for Angel Studios, Brandon Purdie, said in a press release, “There have only been 10 wide-release movies in box office history that have had a second-weekend increase greater than 35% over their opening weekend. All of them achieved this milestone during Christmas. Angel Studios is the only studio to accomplish this feat during the summer blockbuster season with ‘Sound of Freedom.’”
Jared Geesey, the senior vice president of global distribution at Angel Studios added, “While the entire summer movie box office lineup is underperforming, our small independent film continues to grow week over week. Driven by millions of fans and supporters, ‘Sound of Freedom’ has become a national — and soon international — movement for change,”
A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:
SOUND OF FREEDOM is gripping and heartbreaking, but hope-giving. The movie sheds light on the need for strong people to stand up for God’s children around the world who are caught in the vicious, abusive system of sex trafficking. SOUND OF FREEDOM has a strong Christian, moral worldview that promotes sacrifice and the message that “God’s children are not for sale.” MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong and extreme caution for the movie’s mature subject matter, implied and depicted violence, and abuse of children.
