Worship leader Stephen McWhirter recalled how he went from being a God-hating atheist to a strong believer after a single encounter with the Lord that changed his life.
“I was a meth addict. I hated Jesus. I hated Christians. And I ran as far and as fast as I could from all of it. My dad was an evangelist, and I would watch him get up and preach about Jesus as a child, but at home I would watch him physically abuse my mom,” McWhirter explained. “So at a young age, I decided that if God’s real, He is not good, and I didn’t want anything to do with this Jesus guy.”

By age 11, McWhirter was drinking, and by 15, he was not only using hard drugs but also selling them. However, when he was in his early 20s, a friend of his gave him the book The Case For Christ, and it changed everything.
“Somebody came and gave me this book called The Case For Christ, by Lee Strobel…Threw it in my bedroom. Fast forward, it’s like 3 o’clock in the morning, there’s like drugs on the side table next to me, literally. It seems like the most impossible place to come to Jesus,” McWhirter told Savannah Chrisley.
“And, I’m reading this book about Jesus. It is a blur. This to me is like, tell me God’s not real. How did that work? So, I’m reading the book, I don’t even know how that happened, and I just know God’s in the room. Like, I just know He’s in the room. I don’t know how else to explain it other than that, I just know He’s there, right?” he continued. “As I’m reading this stuff about Him and it’s all starting to go from my head to my heart, it’s like sinking in, I start to just go, this thought of just like, God, I believe you’re real.”
McWhirter went on to immediately change his life and lean on the Lord to get him out of a life of drugs while also pursuing worship music. He is now an award-winning artist and reaches millions through his worship music.
Meanwhile, McWhirter openly shares his story everywhere he goes to help those listening understand that God can use anyone to glorify His name, as long as they are willing. His complete change in his life is incredible and a true testament to the power of the Lord and the way that no one is too far gone for Him to save.
