SUITS Topped 2023’s Streaming Charts

By Movieguide® Contributor

Despite first airing in 2011, Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) and Michael Ross (Patrick J. Adams) topped 2023’s streaming charts as SUITS became the number one TV show streamed with the most minutes watched.

According to Nielsen, “While the writers’ strike had an impact on new content this year, the popularity of SUITS was undeniable, landing in the top spot of Nielsen’s top 10 list for a record 12 straight weeks—longer than Netflix originals OZARK (11 weeks), YOU (8 weeks) and STRANGER THINGS (8 weeks). During its 12-week run at the top, audiences watched more than 36.8 billion minutes of the legal dramedy.”

Overall, SUITS totaled 57.7 billion minutes streamed, which means it finished with more minutes streamed than THE OFFICE did in 2020 (57.13 billion minutes).

Brian Fuhrer, Senior Vice President of Product Strategy and Thought Leadership at Nielsen, told The Hollywood Reporter, “We definitely had a lesser number of originals [in 2023]. As a result, the introduction of huge new blockbuster originals that we’re used to, that really wasn’t the case this year.”

“It’s almost like we’ve entered this free trade zone. In particular, the Warner Bros,” Fuhrer told THR in a separate interview. Discovery deal with Netflix was not only interesting, but brilliant, because everybody’s got to get to the point now where they’ve got to maximize the value of their content. We’re getting away from creating these walls that prevent them from doing so.”

The full list of the most streamed shows of 2023 include:

  1. SUITS (Netflix/Peacock): 57.7 billion
  2. BLUEY (Disney+): 43.9 billion
  3. NCIS (Netflix/Paramount+): 39.4 billion
  4. GREY’S ANATOMY (Netflix): 38.6 billion
  5. COCOMELON (Netflix): 36.3 billion
  6. THE BIG BANG THEORY (Max): 27.8 billion
  7. GILMORE GIRLS (Netflix): 25.2 billion
  8. FRIENDS (Max): 25 billion
  9. HEARTLAND (Hulu/Netflix/Peacock): 22.8 billion
  10. SUPERNATURAL (Netflix): 22.8 billion

People spent more time streaming shows and movies in 2023 than in 2022. In 2023, the number increased by 21 percent, and the total number of minutes streamed, out of all TV series, was 339.5 billion.

Movieguide® recently reported on a new SUITS spinoff that will begin filming in March:

The series follows former New York federal prosecutor Ted Black, who now works for clients in Los Angeles.

“His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career,” Variety reported. “Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can’t help but mix their personal and professional lives. All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved.”

No cast members from the original show are slated to return for the spinoff.

Variety added, “Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Rick Hoffman, Meghan Markle, Gina Torres (who led the short-lived PEARSON spinoff), Sarah Rafferty, among others starred in the flagship series. Though, none of the original cast is attached to the spinoff as of yet and NBC has not yet named a lead star.”
