There have been several movies lately that have won the box office battles but which have been wrongly criticized for reasons that indicate that the critics didn’t bother to see the movies.

The most recent case of this phenomenon has been that of the new SUPERMAN movie, which has been accused of being politically correct or woke but which has earned more than $236 million in the United Sates and Canada.

The driving force of a movie is its premise. The premise tells the audience where it’s going so the audience goes there.

For instance, the premise for SUPERMAN is love and kindness defeat envy and greed for power. In the beginning, Superman’s character is established as trying to protect children, animals and the needy. Whenever he’s confronted by a problem, he chooses love and kindness and urges other people to do the same. The villain, Lex Luther, tells us his motivation is intense envy of Superman and an inordinate drive for power. Superman even urges Lex Luthor, after Luther does everything to destroy Superman, to learn how to be kind and loving.

Also, Superman says very clearly that he has all these human weaknesses and Midwestern values to help others. His values were very much the values of the Founding Fathers. They are not the values of those who seek power, who envy success, who will do anything to destroy other people in their quest for power. This is an All-American point of view, the opposite of “woke.”

These are values that we hope our children and grandchildren will learn. In the movie, Superman often gets criticized by those who are jealous, envious and want to rule the world. It sounds like the criticism of the fake news media and the woke mass media of entertainment.

So, the question is, why do spokespeople with apparent faith and values, including conservative values, attack the movie? It seems clear that, in several of these movies, they are taking the filmmakers taken out of context. When they do so, they’re violating a biblical principle, which is do not engage in presumptuous sins.

Of course, we are all presumptuous at times, because we have our prejudices. But, lawyers who are presumptuous and media who are presumptuous do not win the case. The facts win the case, and the American audience has recognized the virtues of the SUPERMAN movie, and ignored the negative nabobs, to use nabob out of context.
