The Property Brothers Introduce New Home Reno Show

The Property Brothers just launched their new show, DON’T HATE YOUR HOUSE, on Nov. 13, and they’re sharing all the neat aspects that make it special.

“It’s relatable. That’s the main theme,” Drew Scott shared with MSNBC on Nov. 12. “Most people we meet, they hate their house for one reason or another but we tried to find some of these people who are…just trying to survive in the home and [they’re] ready to give up, but the cost of moving to a new home and the cost of tax, realtor fees, everything else, they can’t afford to move. So we come in and try to show them that there is hope with their home” and “There is light at the end of the tunnel with their house.”

“Every single person has something in their home that drives them nuts. No one else may notice it, but you do and that resentment gets to you!” Drew expressed to TV Insider. “Even Jonathan and I have things we can’t stand about our homes and you’d think ours would be perfect. But nope! “

Drew’s twin, Jonathan, likes that the “thing” people usually hate the most isn’t easy to fix. However, there are a lot of other things that still make the house worth the effort.

“It’s the wall that awkwardly juts out in your kitchen or the pedestal sink in your bathroom. That’s what makes this show so great, because these houses have good bones or are in the perfect location,” Jonathan added. “The families just need help addressing those problem areas so they can finally move on…and find another thing to hate.”

One of the most common complaints is a lack of space or ill use of space, which “makes sense” because people’s needs for space change, but the house doesn’t.

“But there are always solutions, whether it’s decluttering, smarter storage, opening up the floor plan or even cosmetic upgrades. It just takes a little creative problem solving. And us, of course,” Drew said.

The feature property for the show’s opener has a large backyard and five rescue dogs — which presented a small challenge.

Jonathon joked the biggest hurdle was “Bringing enough treats for the dogs! [Laughs] Space was easily the biggest issue here… They were tripping over each other constantly.”

“We were able to pull it off with a better layout and access to the backyard, but it was a challenge,” Drew said. “We also snuck in a little special addition for the pups, because it’s always our goal to make every member of the family happy.”

Speaking of backyards — those are Jonathon’s favorite features to reimagine.

“Backyards are my absolute favorite. Outdoor space is such a luxury and I love maximizing the potential so families can use it as much as possible,” he said.

Usually, homes have some features that have got to go, and both of the brothers love the chance to knock stuff down.

“Demo day is the best! It’s a great form of therapy,” Jonathon said. “Having a bad day or need to get out your aggression? Nothing does it like a sledgehammer.”

“There’s something so freeing about knocking down that part of your house that’s been taunting you all these years,” Drew said. “The homeowners were really releasing their demons!”

The brothers have enjoyed 11 years of being HGTV hosts and have grown a lot together through the experience.

“While our lives are totally different now with our kids and partners, we’re still the same guys who like to prank each other and have fun,” Drew said.

“If anything, our dad jokes have only gotten better,” Jonathan added. “Or worse, depending on who you ask…”
