Country singer Thomas Rhett Akins and his wife Lauren know what it’s like to trust God through uncertainty.
The Akins shared on Annie F. Downs’ podcast that they believed that God had called them to go to Uganda, Africa, for a period of time. After a season of prayer and confusion, they finally obeyed, but the journey ended up being more difficult than they expected.
“So in all this, now you’re like, ‘Okay, this was God’s story all along, seven weeks, and we don’t know why,’” Downs said in a YouTube short of the interview.
“Correct,” Thomas chimed in. “I was frustrated at this point, you know what I mean?”

He continued, “I’m just like, ‘What are we doing?’ Like, you know…and I need to know, you know what I mean? And there’s just never really a clear why. It’s just ‘Are you going to hear my “yes” and let that be enough?’ I heard a pastor say it one time when he said that sometimes the Lord will give you just enough information to go.”
“To take the next step,” Lauren added.
“But not all the information so that you lose faith,” Thomas finished.
“If I was running the show, I’d be telling you a lot more,” Downs joked.
“Yeah, that’s right,” Thomas said. “That’s where I keep going back to just the mystery of the Kingdom of God. There’s things that we just don’t have to understand, [and] that’s okay.”
Many Christians experience similar situations where they sense God’s leading but they don’t understand why. But, although we may not understand God’s reason behind things, we can trust that He is guiding us. Isaiah 30:21 says, “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”
Right now, the Akins are excited to welcome a new baby into their family.
“Carrying so much joy and anticipation as well as carrying a lot of heavy and sadness in this season,” Lauren posted recently, referencing both her pregnancy and her sister’s battle with breast cancer. “It feels so hard and unnatural and sometimes wrong to feel both but these are my days right now. So grateful for another little life growing in our family and also heartbroken that my little sister is walking through a valley that feels so hard. It’s okay to feel both. I know our Father can handle any emotion (or hormone) I throw at Him. And I am so grateful that Jesus has been so near.”
While trusting God can be hard, He always has a plan.
