TikTok to Launch Instagram Competitor, ‘TikTok Notes’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Global social media video platform TikTok is testing out a new feature to compete with Instagram—TikTok Notes.
“TikTok Notes…looks like it’s just another picture and text sharing thing…threads and maybe like old school IG,” NBC News reported Thursday. “And some users are already getting a message that their photos could be shown on the app.”
“A website for TikTok notes is currently live on the web with a non-functioning open app button that has maybe a taste of it—a graphic of photos with captions underneath,” NBC said.

The news comes as the U.S. considers a ban on the media platform, as India, the EU, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, New Zealand, the UK, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Taiwan have done.
Movieguide reported on April 8:
TikTok is on the verge of being banned in the United States, but the platform claims its economic impact makes it invaluable to the country.
“TikTok drove $14.7 billion in revenue in a dozen key sectors in the US economy and contributed $24.2 billion to overall GDP in 2023,” Yahoo! Finance reported.
Washington Post Tech Columnist Taylor Lorenz said about TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, “They want to grow and just get as much scale as possible in the US as you know before this potential ban. Now it’s unclear whether this ban could affect something like TikTok Notes, especially even with ByteDance also recently launched Lemon8, which is kind of their version of Pinterest as well, and that’s also been getting traction in the US.”
Mike Proulx, research director at analysis firm Forrester, says copycat moves like this are usually successful if executed well, but they’re risky. Twitter previously tried to pull a similar move, but it flopped.
“TikTok confirmed that it is working on the app but specified that it is not available yet,” TechCrunch reported on Tuesday.
TikTok told TechCrunch, “As part of our continued commitment to innovating the TikTok experience, we’re exploring ways to empower our community to create and share their creativity with photos and text in a dedicated space for those formats.”
