Tom Holland Talks SPIDER-MAN 4: ‘I’ll Always Want to Do More’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Fans are ready for Spider-Man to swing into action for a fourth film.

While at the third annual Sands International Film Festival, actor Tom Holland discussed the possibility of another installment in his SPIDER-MAN franchise.

“The simple answer is that I’ll always want to do SPIDER-MAN films,” he revealed. “I owe my life and career to SPIDER-MAN. So the simple answer is yes. I’ll always want to do more.”

While fans are elated to hear that Holland is up for another movie, the more “complicated answer” is how the writers will continue the story after the events of SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME.

In the movie, Holland’s Peter Parker teams up with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men to cure villains.

“After battling the villains, Spider-Man and his allies successfully cure Doc Ock, Green Goblin, Sandman, Electro, and the Lizard, turning them back into the non-altered humans they were before,” a summary reads.

However, “Peter realizes the only way to save the world from multiversal havoc (and send the villains and the other two Spider-Men back) is to complete Doctor Strange’s spell, which erases Peter’s identity from the world. Doctor Strange succeeds and Peter goes back to square one as a superhero, with no help from anyone, alone in the world completely — for now.”

Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME is filled with fun surprises and twists, plus lots of action. There’s plenty of serious jeopardy leading to stirring, sad and tearful moments. The performances are perfectly melded with the story’s twists and turns, including some surprise appearances. NO WAY HOME has a strong moral, redemptive premise that everyone deserves a second chance, even supervillains. In the movie, Aunt May inspires Peter to do the right thing and give the supervillains a second chance to set things right. SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME has many light obscenities and profanities, intense action violence and occult content.

“We have the best in the business working toward whatever the story might be,” Holland said of a fourth movie. “But until we’ve cracked it, we have a legacy to protect,”  “The third movie was so special in so many ways that we need to make sure we do the right thing.”

“This is the first time in this process that I’ve been part of the creative so early,” he added. “It’s just a process where I’m watching and learning. It’s just a really fun stage for me. Like I said, everyone wants it to happen. But we want to make sure we’re not overdoing the same things.”

While no plot has been announced, producer Amy Pascal told the New York Times in 2021 where a potential fourth film could be headed.

“At the end of the movie we just made, you see Spider-Man make a momentous decision, one that you’ve never seen him make before,” she said. “It’s a sacrifice. And that gives us a lot to work with for the next film.”

Movieguide® previously reported:

It’s been over a year since the fourth SPIDER-MAN movie was confirmed, and now it looks like it’s officially in the works.

“According to The InSneider, the MCU’s SPIDER-MAN 4 is eyeing a September-October filming start. The upcoming MCU movie is said to still be looking for a director, with Fast & Furious franchise director Justin Lin among the names in the mix to helm the project. Zendaya is also rumored to return as MJ for SPIDER-MAN 4. At the time of writing, there has been no confirmation from Marvel Studios or Sony about the contents of the report,” Screen Rant reported.

Possible director Justin Lin directed FAST AND FURIOUS movies 3, 4, 5, 6 and STAR TREK BEYOND. This will be the first time he takes on a superhero movie.

“It seems like the movie is further along than thought,” Screen Rant said. “Given its rumored September-October filming start date, Holland’s Spider-Man 4 could be swinging into theaters by late 2025. Normally, MCU movies tend to go before cameras a year before they are supposed to release, and with Spider-Man 4 eyeing a late 2024 filming start, the movie could be ready for a release in 2025 if there are no unforeseen delays.”
