Actor Tony Hale poured his heart — and eight years of his life — into his new movie, SKETCH, and he can’t wait for audiences to experience the lesson his character learns as he navigates grief and fatherhood.

“I play Taylor, who is the dad, and I lost my wife. And he is just trying to manage how to deal with this with his kids, and his daughter is drawing these, kind of, crazy pictures, and they come to life,” Hale told Movieguide®’s Kaelii Williams at the movie’s red carpet premiere. “So, we describe it like INSIDE OUT meets JURASSIC PARK. And he is just trying to navigate parenthood but also learning the lesson, like, you gotta allow your kids to process feelings. And he woke up to that lesson.”

While Hale stars in the movie, he was also involved as a producer. Having devoted so much time to the story, he can’t believe it is now in the audiences’ hands.

“This took us eight years to get made, so I think the whole thing was pretty surprising and quite a journey,” Hale said. “However, it was one of those things; I remember the last day we wrapped, and I think I picked up the director, who is not a small man, because I was so elated that we got through it, you know. Because I knew what was gonna happen with it, and it’s such a beautiful movie and it’s so full of life. So just seeing that whole journey, it makes it that much sweeter.”

“It’s just been super emotional, you know, after a seven-year journey, and really just both believing in this idea for so long,” Hale added in an interview with The Wrap. “And, you know, with that process comes a lot of frustration, a lot of disappointment, and someone falling out, and all that kind of stuff. And just kind of encouraging each other and to see it come to life.”

SKETCH tells a very strong family-centered story which focuses on how grief affects people differently, especially based on their age. Though it broaches a difficult topic, it does so in a way that can be understood by even young viewers. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

Overall, SKETCH is a funny and creative exploration of the way grief affects people differently, with a strong moral worldview stressing family and friendship. The father is devoted to his children and tries to help them deal with their mother’s death. Also, his children and their friend bond together and stick by each other. However, the movie has some magical thinking, foul language and violence. Also, SKETCH has many scary scenes that might frighten children. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children.

Distributed by Angel Studios, SKETCH hits theaters on Aug. 6.
