By Movieguide® Contributor
While GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE’s release date was pushed back due to the actors’ strike, fans of the franchise still have much to be excited about for the upcoming movie.
THE NEW EMPIRE follows up the events of GODZILLA VS. KONG, where, after an epic battle, the two legendary monsters reached a truce.
“They’re fully fleshed out, realized characters that have all these nonverbal communication moments,” director Adam Wingard told SlashFilm before the release of GODZILLA VS. KONG. “I think that’s the thing I’m most proud of.”
This relationship between the two monsters will continue to bloom as they work together in the upcoming movie to fight “a colossal undiscovered threat hidden to our world.”
Movieguide® appreciated GODZILLA VS. KONG’s “strong moral elements and some redemptive metaphors, symbols and behavior.”
Part of the review reads:
GODZILLA VS. KONG is pretty much just a spectacular slugfest. However, it provides plenty of big screen thrills and a couple fun surprises. Also, the heart of the movie is Kong’s touching friendship with the little deaf girl. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children for some foul language and many battles between and against giant monsters. Godzilla and King Kong almost kill one another in GODZILLA VS. KONG.
According to THE NEW EMPIRE’s official description, “the epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them tohumankinds forever.”
Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry and Kaylee Hottle will all rejoin the cast alongside newcomers to the franchise Dan Stevens, Fala Chen, Alex Ferns and Rachel House.
Although originally slated for a March 15 release, the movie is now set to hit theaters on April 12, 2024.
Movieguide® previously reported on the Monsterverse:
AppleTV+ gave fans a first look at the new Godzilla series, revealing the plot line and the name.
“Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking revelation that monsters are real, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” tracks two siblings following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization known as Monarch,” AppleTV’s synopsis reads.
“Clues lead them into the world of monsters and ultimately down the rabbit hole to Army officer Lee Shaw (played by Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell), taking place in the 1950s and half a century later where Monarch is threatened by what Shaw knows. The dramatic saga — spanning three generations — reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives,” it concludes.
