Will Viggo Mortensen Return as Aragorn for New LORD OF THE RINGS Movie?

By Movieguide® Contributor

LORD OF THE RINGS star Viggo Mortensen is sharing whether or not he’s planning on returning for THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mortensen, who played Aragorn in the original trilogy, revealed what would enable him to return.

“I haven’t read a script. So I don’t know,” he said. “The script is the most important thing to me unless I’m broke, I have no money and I’m lucky to get any job. So it depends.”

In May, Mortensen discussed what it would look like for him to reprise his role with GQ.

GQ asked Mortensen, “Back when THE HOBBIT was first announced, you said that you would return to play Aragorn if the story was right and the character actually did something. With the recently announced THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM, which does involve Aragorn, would you consider returning?”

Mortensen responded: “Sure. I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually. I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”

Variety recently reported on THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM:

The project is currently in the early stages of script development from writers Walsh and Boyens, along with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, and will “explore storylines yet to be told,” Zaslav said.

Studio leaders Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy stated in a press release, “For over two decades, moviegoers have embraced the LORD OF THE RINGS film trilogy because of the undeniable devotion Peter, Fran and Philippa have shown towards protecting the legacy of Tolkien’s works, and to ensure audiences could experience the incredible world he created in a way that honors his literary vision.

“We are honored they have agreed be our partners on these two new films,” the two continued. “With Andy coming aboard to direct LORD OF THE RINGS: THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM, we continue an important commitment to excellence that is a true hallmark of how we all want to venture ahead and further contribute to the ‘Lord of the Rings’ cinematic history.”

Movieguide® previously reported on whether Ian McKellan, who played Gandalf, will return:

Ian McKellen, known for his majestic white beard and remarkable wisdom in his portrayal of Gandalf in LORD OF THE RINGS, revealed that he’s open to taking part in the upcoming sequel.

In a discussion with THE TIMES, the 85-year-old actor was asked if he’d like to return as Gandalf. “I haven’t shaved in months,” he said, alluding to his character’s facial hair.

“I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing him. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. It would be silly to do it otherwise,” he said.

“There is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan,” he confirmed, adding that he would return “if I’m alive.”
