After introducing a generation of kids to classic literature in the late ’90s, Wishbone the dog will finally receive a documentary detailing the journey that brought the show to life.
“WE HAVE A MOVIE POSTER!!! Super excited to share the official film poster for WHAT’S THE STORY, WISHBONE? which is a documentary I produced with @elizabethbuckley512 and @foodfilmwino (who also directed),” Larry Brantley, who voiced Wishbone on the show, announced on Instagram. “The film chronicles the journey that we all took to get the little dog show to the screen – the highs, the lows, and the friends and family we made along the way. I couldn’t be prouder of it.”
“Let’s call it a love letter, not only to the beautiful people who made the show happen, but all the fans who were (and still are) talking about what the dog did for them,” Brantley continued. “Go and follow @thewishbonedocumentary for updates and images from the movie (and maybe a few surprises).”
WISHBONE was a TV show released in the late ’90s that reimagined classic pieces of literature through the eyes of a dog who imagines himself as the protagonist. The show ran for forty episodes across two seasons and also resulted in a series of books based on classic stories like Don Quixote, Oliver Twist, Frankenstein and Romeo and Juliet.
“Let your imagination run wild with your favorite dog, Wishbone,” a description of the series reads. “The adventurous little terrier takes you on fantastic journeys inside your favorite storybook tales. This clever pup with a nose for adventure will delight and inspire the whole family.”

The documentary will detail all of the behind the scenes efforts needed to bring the show to life, from giving the dog who played Wishbone his own personal AC unit to teaching him how to ride a horse.
Mattel first announced a Wishbone documentary in 2021 when it revealed a slew of its IP that are being developed for the big screen. Other titles being developed include American Girl, Barney, Hot Wheels, Magic 8 Ball, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots and View Master.
“With a literal toy box of IP to draw from, the chance to create with Mattel would be any writer’s dream, and I’m honored the opportunity was extended to me,” writer Marcy Kelly told Deadline after being signed by the toy company to pen multiple upcoming projects. “It’s been a joy collaborating with a creative team that’s razor-sharp and dedicated to developing these beloved and nostalgic toys’ stories in both relevant and unexpected ways.”
For those who grew up learning about classic literature from Wishbone on TV, the upcoming documentary is sure to be a joy to watch as they discover how the creators of the show pulled it off.
