What You Need To Know:
MOVIEGUIDE® does not recommend STOMP THE YARD. Jesus Christ took a terrible beating and went to the cross so that we might be forgiven our sins. He calls us to a life of forgiveness, sacrifice and compassion. This movie is about taunting and dominating others. It contains foul language, alcohol use and dishonesty all the way up to the head of “Truth” University. Seek the Truth that will set you free not the dance steps that will get you killed.
Content:
(H, C, LLL, VV, SSS, N, M) Humanist worldview with people constantly challenging each other like animals trying to establish their leadership in a pack, plus one Christian element where a “dance team” says the Lord’s Prayer; 27 obscenities and one strong profanity; “teams” dance as if threatening opposing teams and a gang fight with a murder follows one “dance” competition; no sex but girl in very casual clothing spends time in dorm with boy – not clear if they had sex; upper male nudity of “dancers” working out and practicing, and female midriffs displayed; some use of alcohol; no obvious drugs; and, head of college tries to bribe boy to stop seeing his daughter.
More Detail:
STOMP THE YARD is about young man named DJ (Columbus Short) who moves to Atlanta to go to the fictional black college Truth University after his brother is killed in a gang fight in Los Angeles. DJ has a talent for step dancing and is recruited by two fraternities that annually hope to win the National Step Dancing Competition.
Step dancing, as shown in this movie, is gang dancing. It is in-your-face, confrontational dancing where the dancer’s expressions look as if they would prefer to kill their competition rather than dance against them. If gestures carried subtitles, this form of dancing would be a string of profanities. It’s not surprising that DJs brother was shot by some sore losers in a step dancing competition. The college version of the dancing looks no friendlier than the street version. Dancers taunt opponents and behave as if the object is to be seen as alpha males in a pack of animals.
Even the “romantic” element of the movie involves DJ attempting to win the girlfriend of the leader of the rival fraternity. Happily, he does this by being less bossy and a lot more considerate of the girl, even as he continues to taunt the boyfriend.
