(L, VV, M, B) 9 obscenities, regrettably several by the 8 year-old star, but no profanity; violence in the form of car chase with property destruction, several fist-fights with bloody nose & lip, punches to the groin, & bullies strong-arm smaller child at school; ridiculous rear-view scene of two characters urinating; and, clear message that a little boy needs a father & healthy view of a man needing a little boy as well.

In the cute comedy COP AND A HALF, Devon Butler (Norman Golden) dreams of and plays at being a police officer. He packs hardware (a water gun), utilizes a sophisticated communications network (walkie-talkie with his buddy Sanchez) and watches cop shows with his grandmother to learn the lingo. All this sharp 8 year-old lacks is a real badge. Devon gets his chance after witnessing a police chase and criminal getaway. He parlays the information he has into a day on the real police force, in a real undercover police car, with a real unwilling policeman partner, Nick McKenna (Burt Reynolds). With his own badge and cuffs in hand, Devon is set and ready to “protect and serve” his coastal Florida community. Though definitely unique, Devon is just like any other little boy in that he needs love, attention and acceptance from a father, or at least a father figure. He needs someone to be like, and his choice is a police officer. Once Nick realizes this, he doesn’t let Devon down. Nick’s once sour disposition melts as Devon wins him over.
The production is good and the acting is good, from stars to supporting cast (this is not a deep film by any stretch). The all around quality of COP AND A HALF is very good. Little Norman Golden is superb as the precocious Devon. The only questionable content is the language and mild violence. In a family-oriented movie, why have any obscene language at all, especially from the lips of the 8 year-old star?
