More Detail:

John Carpenter’s latest horror movie, IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS, recounts the story of insurance investigator John Trent, played by Sam Neill, and how he is driven to madness and ultimately murders someone with an axe. When a famous horror novelist, whose books have been causing outbreaks of insane violence among those who read them, mysteriously disappears, Trent is called in to investigate. After reading the author’s latest novel, Trent experiences his own nightmare and uncovers an evil plot by invading demons to destroy mankind from within the mind. Terminally caught in a hellish “Twilight Zone” in which the human and the bizarre intermingle and readily swap places, Trent discovers that his own life has been recreated in the pages of the author’s upcoming novel, and he himself has been portrayed as a convicted axe murderer.

IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS sets out to do one thing: frighten the audience. Like many horror movies, this one mentions several biblical events; however, with black humor scattered about, this ghoulish and violent film features evil as the victor in battling good, and in that sense is tragically flawed. Exceptionally distasteful demonic creatures combine with a pervasive amount of foul language and an anti-biblical worldview to bring audiences a movie in which the R rating could simply stand for REPULSIVE!
